Buffalo, NY - Elmwood Village

Among Buffalo's favorite neighborhoods (Allentown, North Park, Parkside, etc), Elmwood Village has been the most desirable for much of its existence.

The Elmwood Village section of Buffalo is about 2 miles from downtown, and is the area immediately adjacent to a roughly 2-mile long section of Elmwood Avenue, north of the Allentown neighborhood, and south of Delaware Park. Elmwood forms the primary small retail business and entertainment strip on the West Side of Buffalo, and the surrounding neighborhoods date back predominately to the late 1800s. Many of the area's streets are part of the Olmsted Parkway system.

Just north of the Elmwood Village are Buffalo State College, Delaware Park, and the Richardson-Olmsted Complex, which formerly housed the NY State Hospital for the Insane, but now has been partially restored and is a hotel and conference center:

The day of these photos happened to be Porchfest, a neighborhood wide block party with live music in various locations.

Images from my walk down Elmwood (with a few stops along the way). Elmwood is an eclectic mix of homes, apartments, businesses, locally owned shops, churches, galleries, and schools.

On the side streets adjacent to Elmwood homes predominate, but there is still a mix of apartments and businesses.

Many of the largest 19th century homes in the EV are on Richmond Avenue. Several have been converted to multiple apartment units, but many more still are grand homes.

Great pics! Some nice sights too

Is this fire box still active or just there for historical purposes? We had this exact one in my house growing up as part of a display, as both of my parents were firefighters and when Harrisburg decommissioned theirs some people were able to purchase them and what not.

These boxes were located every few blocks in the city before 911 and cell phones became common. I thought they had all been decommissioned, but I am still surprised to see several still around the city.

Fantastic neighborhood that any city would be proud to call it’s own.

Three years since the last update, here are a few images taken since my last posting, beginning with oldest (more or less) first as we went through the COVID years.

Saturday farmer's market at Elmwood and Bidwell Parkway continued, albeit with social distance added between vendors and customers.

What a beautiful place. And it's very urban, full of people on the streets. Buffalo is doing really great.
