Confirmation that the Orlando station opening has been delayed until 2019 (one year slip):

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/busi...137093528.html
https://therealdeal.com/miami/2017/0...at-least-2019/

Also, confirmation that Brightline is looking to expand... to Tampa!

http://trn.trains.com/news/news-wire...htline-new-ceo

Since that article is behind a paywall, so here's the important bit (no, I'm not going to copy/paste the whole thing):

Quote:
In a Trains News Wire interview with both men, Reininger made it clear that the reason for the reorganization now is that the parent company intends to expand and replicate Brightline’s passenger rail blueprint to other markets, starting with the next segment from Orlando’s airport to Tampa, Fla., while “Dave can keep his hand on the wheel of the operating company.”

“Tampa is Florida’s next largest population center. For years we’ve had an expression of interest from leaders in that marketplace who are more than a little interested in a connection into our service,” Reininger says, “So we will be able to research and apply ourselves to that opportunity for sure. And [Florida East Coast Railway] already controls the right-of-way into Jacksonville, so we will start to explore whether that is a feasible and reasonable alternative.”

Service between Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach to begin in July. MiamiCentral will open in September:

http://www.orlandoweekly.com/Blogs/a...-delayed-again

It seems like building a new rail line (Cocoa Beach to Orlando) is much more complicated than AAF originally thought. Perhaps that's why they sound so eager to start work on the Tampa section; 1) they will have had the recent practice of building to Orlando and 2) they know now the process will be very long, so its better to start sooner. If the Orlando section really does open by 2019, I wouldn't expect the Tampa extension to open before 2024 (5 years seems reasonable to me).
Perhaps by that time Brightline will have already extended up to Jacksonville, since they already own the ROW and tracks up that way making the expansion of service much easier/faster.
Either way, interesting times in Florida. I hope this project is a runaway success and inspires other private passenger rail startups across the country!

Feds Approve Tri-Rail To MiamiCentral station

Feds Approve Tri-Rail To MiamiCentral , Service Will Begin By The End Of 2017.
By TNM Staff on April 25, 2017

Tri-Rail service will be coming to downtown Miami by the end of this year.

The new service is on track to begin by the end of 2017 now that federal officials have signed off on the plan, according to a press release from Tri-Rail.

Of 50 daily trains that now run from Palm Beach County, 26 will terminate at MiamiCentral. The remaining 24 trains will continue to Miami Airport as they currently do.

All Aboard Florida is preparing to begin separate express Brightline service from MiamiCentral to Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach later this year. Plans for a Tri-Rail Coastal Link along the same tracks with local service from Miami to Jupiter are also in the works.

Is it fair to assume they will be opening in a still very much under construction MiamiCentral terminal/building? I keep hearing about 2017 openings for this facility but that doesn't look like it will be anywhere near finished this year.

^ That's a very good question and I think we can question the timeline since we are so used to rail projects in the US being funded by the Government and being behind schedule. However this is a privately built project so who knows but I would imagine that the train station itself will be functional enough to receive passengers by August.

Tampa's metro population is 2,971,086 (19th largest metro in USA)- Fort Myers metro population is 618,754 (85th largest metro in USA)

At some point a privately run passenger railroad can't make a profit. Maybe a state subsidized railroad may make it to Fort Myers some day - but I can't visualize All Aboard Florida extending Brightline trains to it anytime soon. There's just not enough potential riders to make that capitalist risk.....

For what it's worth, here are the metro population data to where All Aboard Florida might send Brightline train to....
Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Palm Beach 5,828,191(8th largest in USA)
Orlando 2,387,138 (24th largest in USA)
Jacksonville 1,345,596 (40th largest in USA)
and I already posted the data for Tampa

Going to Jacksonville (ranked 40th) with as many trains that will be running between South Florida and Central Florida may be questionable, Fort Myers (ranked 85th) would certainly be questionable....
