What do you guys think of 50 W St vs 1000M? Very similar looking for obvious reasons.

^ Soft corners, a slight cantilever, a gridded crown. There are definitely some similarities as even to a non-architect both appear to share the same DNA.

I think the glazing, fit & finish is better in the NY design (not without mentioning probably much more expensive, as it is in NYC after all). But I think the buildings overall shape and floor plates are much more appealing in the Chicago design. It seems NYC floor plates are rather boxy and almost dormitory-esque.

Can't you tell just by looking at the up close photos of the exterior there is a difference in the glazing.? Comment had nothing to do with total cost of the project just curtain wall.

Go to the Jahn site to see close ups of both buildings exteriors.

Also, 50 W. is almost half the S.F. as 1000 M, so anything under 1.1 billion would make it more expensive project, no?

^^rgarri4, your model shows that this is probably the best location in Chicago to add a building this tall. It helps NEMA and One Museum Park feel less lonely. On the other hand, if it were too far north it would add little to the skyline, as your model has illustrated for the 875 ft 400 LSD.

As others noted, this will have a HUGE skyline impact and really tie in the new large South Loop developments (as well as some of the taller 78 buildings to a lesser extent).

One of the most popular / iconic viewing spots is from Alder and this will pop very strongly from that vantage.

Very nice! By the way...in the first picture, the very top little bit of the current 1000M design reminds me of the top part of a cheap blender..

Awesome pictures. Still loving the original design, I think its intimidating. WTF is that V thing sitting on the south lot of NBC.? Belongs in Beijing. But I enjoy the creativity. Can we bring back Waterview on that site. Would be perfect.

Quick question, not to get bumped for a different subject and if you do, but are these models hand made or put in a 3D model maker? Cost to make them?

Yeah seeing the huge models and iterative massing studies of the original stacked box design in their office made me really miss it. It looked like they really studied it a lot. I didn't really see any studies of the current design. In-fact I don't think I saw any.

That actually pretty damn tall at that location. Its going to make a huge impact on the skyline. Fingers crossed making it all the way to the top.
The market is making me fear a Waterview Tower situation.

I certainly hope not.

They have a fabrication studio with an employee dedicated to model making and maintaining the shop. A majority of the models were built from CNCd or laser cut pieces that were then assembled by hand.

That bird mural should be photographed well and put in photography museum for future generations. Because no one will ever remember the work put into it otherwise.

I'm not saying the Art Institute by any means

but it should at least be recorded as a completed work that is due some respect, for the artist or artists that assembled it.

Btw that looks like a nice deep slab and mat pour.

Anyone knows the square yards in that one, and how many cement trucks? It did not seem to be videoed like the other large pour mats we have recorded.
As far as I know. I personally would like this information to be documented. I imagine it was started in the evening and went into the next day.

Good thing these construction workers are likely highly paid and compensated for the shift differential to do such work. I fear the recession that could potentially but of a lot of these well paid tradesman on layoffs if this boom comes to an end or a major decline.

I agree. Would be great if they could somehow incorporate/replicate the mural in the buildings lobby to preserve what was there.

On a slightly different topic I just have to say how much I dislike the lower half of the building. It's so disconnected from the rest of the building and I don't think it even does a good job in relationship to the other buildings around it. It looks so 1960 value engineered suburban office tower. Here's hoping the final outcome is much better.
