Shacks by the Stacks: The Great Canadian Shacks in the City Thread

Shacks by the Stacks: Crappy shacks next to soaring skyscraper stacks.

Show them with pride. Show them without rancor. No biscuits or twisted panties allowed.

Good ol' London Ontario has Shacks by the Stacks.

Best thread name ever

A couple of Winnipeg entries:

https://goo.gl/maps/DRK4NLYXMdWFG86F9 -- the people of North St. Boniface resisted development of any kind which led to this weird neighbourhood of actual semi-rural shacks (lio's gonna love these) and more recently nice infills in the shadow of Portage and Main

https://goo.gl/maps/rHUxxVH8T7yz8NPDA -- the West End and Centennial neighbourhoods have a lot of run down, 100+ year old houses a stone's throw from downtown. This area is extremely resistant to gentrification despite the location close to the city centre.

Oh no! Montreal! And right in the shade of Le 1000!

This isn't great either, tbh.

There were two real shacks on (I think I recall) Notre-Dame West (or was it St-Antoine?) not that long ago, boarded up, some people wanted to save them, they were from ~1810, it generated a discussion about heritage preservation (which made the news, I read about it in La Presse at the time, I was a subscriber then). They're gone now though.

Much shackier than your example - which is a clearly urban type of construction.

Griffintown used to have a few. It was really atmospheric to walk around there on a winter morning in the late '90s. I remember coming home from a party on the Plateau at dawn, walking all the way back to St-Henri, and Ann Street was just a canyon of looming relics under that cold bright sun. It might as well have been the Roman forum for me. That Montreal was really something, although of course the present one is much healthier.

Quebec City has no real CBD, so even though one can find shacks even near the heart of the city, it's not really possible to find this "shack in the shadow of great skyscrapers" effect there.

It's possible to find single-family residential very close to the center of the city, like that pink one there:

https://www.google.ca/maps/@46.80973...7i13312!8i6656

But you have to go further away to find classic detached SFHs.

Closest shacks to the city's core would likely be on the Lévis side.

What if you only have the shacks?

Kidding. All of our stacks have shacks. The interface between modern office and older residential here is parking lot.

Wasn't The Rooms designed to be a giant version of the classic fisherman's shack? One could argue St. John's "wins the thread".

Not fully detached but there's pretty shacky stuff at the bottom of the cliff (which was always a working class / poor neighborhood).

Shack with oversized stack:

Toronto: Get ready for a shack attack!

Here

Here

Shacks surrounded by condoville

Single shack squeezed between two forlorn commercial properties. Condo towers in distance.

And many more. Toronto is filled with shacks.

Shacks as art:

Back in the early 80's I was often on this street and I always noticed this house as a hold out for the towers that were appearing and often thought it wouldn't be around for long

https://goo.gl/maps/Rkwa8JMxQ77X3hPd6

It lasted until 2018 and by 2019

https://goo.gl/maps/x1mJvizJQGPAfQj58 the demolition experts had weaved their magic.

Great thread topic.

How about Roundabouts of Canada, merging lanes past and present, municipal signs with incorrect spelling, out of date 'coming soon' development signs

Here's a fully detached, single-family wooden shack, complete with lawn and backyard, that's 1.33 km from Place Royale, 1.40 km from Château Frontenac.

Great examples. I knew there were some crapola shacks in the Griffintown environs but when I looked on Google street view, everything I found was being redeveloped.

I recall seeing some old stables from the early 1800s (or even earlier) in Griffintown/Cite de Multimedia, as well as next to the old Steve's Music store.

Here is shitkicker on St. Antoine Ouest

Canadian cities are all full of shacks, or at least full of clashing architectural styles and scales.

We'll never have polished cities that look like Haussmann's Paris or downtown Washington DC, so we might as well revel in our shacky-ness.

This one's cute but it's still a shack:

What a surprising, exotic, and dare I say shacktastic thread. I posted a half dozen examples from American cities in the Skyline thread so not just a Canadian phenomenon either.
