Are the photos of Vanderbilt Ave from SL Green’s website? I thought that there was pushback about those big planters/trees. I think they look great. Too bad there’s not a fountain too.

All of Vanderbilt should be pedestrianized.

Just some images from SL Green's annual report. Not sure what the outcome will be with the plaza design.

From various SL Green presentations (2018-19), a little more info on the timeline (leasing, top out, plaza construction)...

so the so-called spire here is all for show and not for go? that is, no antenna or anything useful in it?

That's the way spires are supposed to be.

The aesthetics is part of the reason. Rather than a flat roof, this tower will be iconic and recognized.

meh. this is why we will forever have these antenna/spire and crown gripes. it doesn't really add anything to this otherwise fine building to me.

That's exactly it. It was designed to be a New York icon, recalling the classics like the Chrysler, 40 Wall, Empire State, etc. And that's how it should be on the NY skyline. Plenty of dull, flatroofed skylibes elsewhere. But NY should at least look the part.

I am very excited to see another "spire" enter the New York skyline. Some of the best photos of New York are from the 1930's when spires graced the downtown area. Something about spires reaching and pointing to new heights and the sky, lifts the city up, whereas with only flat roofs feels like a lid is being kept on the city. The skyline and the city feels like it is ascending toward something more with variety a of crowns on the skyscrapers.

Got a good look at this baby from the Top of the Rock. Looking good, but still won't have the full effect until it's topped out. Will post some pics when I can.
