This is one of the things about living in SF: Those low clouds (locally called "fog" or the "marine layer" creep in from the sea most afternoons in summer. The city's central hills (Twin peaks, Mt. Davidson) block them from the downtown area until they build up enough to pour like liquid over the top of the hills and down the side through the Castro and Haight neighborhoods. Since I live closer to downtown, I get to watch this out the window--usually at just about 4 in afternoon but on very clear days sometimes later as in the photo I posted. They usually reach my place, closer to downtown, a hour or two later and by 9 PM the whole city is swirling in mist. Usually the last place to be enveloped is the Mission District so it has a reputation for being the city's warmest, sunniest neighborhood. Sometimes to the west of the hills out by the ocean (Richmond, Sunset neighborhoods), they get no sun at all in July and August.
