Feels weird that they would make that decision so close to starting construction...?

Well they just build the podium as if they were gonna build the tower, just don't build higher then the podium... not unheard of

I have a hard time believing this, given that this whole project functions like one grand unit

I have a hard time believing they wouldn't just put the foundations in right away, but it's totally feasible they would just stop at the podium level a la Block 37 and build the second tower later.

Hmm. I'm sort of close to this project but not directly involved and I have heard nothing about this. But in either case the whole podium has to be constructed. The tower cannot stand by itself, because all of it's services, the loading dock, and the ramps connecting lower parking levels are all located in the podium. Not to mention that making a 4 story deep hole in two phases would not be very economically practical.

If true, it's better than only the short tower
Without giving away too much information, we heard it from the glazing contractor that is in line to get Tower A. Something along the lines of the owner and Power concerned with giving both towers to one company.

^ Interesting.

I sort of wonder if that simply means that they are going to use different subs for the second tower, as opposed to delaying the start of the first tower at all.

I really hope they build both towers at once

^My first thought was because they’re predicting a cool-down in the market. Go figure it’s because the market is too hot. There’s concern Power and their subs are too busy to take on such a large project at this time. I can attest to the volume of work out to bid right now. 25% up from this time last year.

What a time to be alive

Both towers are going up together, but there are three different glazing contractors. Many trade packages are being broken up due to size.

Work will begin before the end of March.

Confirmed. No split in timing on the towers or podium. All going up together. Look for Power to secure the site starting Wednesday 3/13.

That's good, this project would look odd with only one tower

What makes you say that? (the market being too hot)

The short tower is very BMO, 110 N. Wacker.
That’s not a “mini rendering,” that’s someone taking the original and stretching it out

That is OCS. It's not a "mini" one, it's an image with vertical distortion. You can tell that because the main tower is still proportionally about double the size of One Superior, and on the other side, Lawson House.

EDIT: Here's the same image, just squished to be half the width:

I wonder if JDL got spooked after the well-known glass debacle at Vista and is trying to hedge their bets with a few different glaziers?

There are a lot of good reasons to split these packages. Not having all eggs in one basket is certainly one of them.

Yes, they shrank this design by 33% to 650', they are also planning on shrinking all the surrounding buildings as well as shown in the image.
