Molson lifts lid on new BC brewery

Quote:
Molson-Coors has announced it's moving its British Columbia brewing operations to the Fraser Valley after issuing a last call for its iconic facility in Vancouver.

The company says it will build a new state-of-the-art facility on 14 1/2 hectares in Chilliwack, BC, about 100 kilometres away from its current site.

Molson Coors Canada CEO Stewart Glendinning says the Chilliwack site met all of their requirements for a new facility, including water quality and location near the Trans-Canada Highway and the US border.

After six decades of brewing in Vancouver, Molson Coors recently sold its site at the foot of the Burrard Bridge for an undisclosed price.

Chilliwack's Mayor Sharon Gaetz says Molson Coors will be one of the largest private-sector projects to come to her city and will encourage future economic development in the area.

Glendinning says Chilliwack met all of its requirements and the company wants to raise a glass to a long and prosperous relationship with the community.

Three guesses what will replace the iconic Vancouver brewery.

My money is on them building 1000 under market value apartments and social housing on that site. You heard it here first.

Concord owns it, I say it will remain empty for several years.

A plot of land that size near Kits Beach, W4th and a future bike/greenway?

I think the COV will eventually rezone the land to permit mixed light industrial (tech), commercial (shoppers drug mart or a save on) and luxury residential units.

In Scandinavia, that would be more normal. But I don't think that will happen here in Vancouver, particularly as Concord owns it. But let me say that I hope that I am wrong!

I really hope not. No reason why social housing / under market housing should be built on prime location, waterfront land.

Well you can't have tall buildings there.

The news articles said the water was high quality...
Hopefully they'll have air scrubbers for air entering the plant.

Except, its not waterfront land.

The indian reserve land north of the brewery is waterfront property.
And is also getting redeveloped.

Chilliwack last year had supposedly the best water in BC.

Basically the aquifers in the valley have some of the best water in the world and I am sure the brewery will tap them.

Agreed. With all the tech companies in Kits, it only makes sense.
There is no way industry would want to be anywhere near downtown due to the traffic and road networks in place. The trucks cause traffic chaos as they enter and leave the brewery. Right now, trucks can barely get out of the brewery onto 1st and can barely turn onto Burrard due to the small streets...don't think that bike lane on Burrard will help either, as they could barely make the left turn even when it wasn't there. If the city is serious about keeping industry there, they definitely need to redesign the streets in the area and provide direct and easy access to Burrard from the lot.

The train certainly made moving of goods much simpler. The raw materials came in from the South, and finished goods were easily moved North to downtown over the Kitsilano trestle.

I was obviously joking. We all know what will be going up in there: a shit-load of world class spandrel condos. It will be the New New Coal Harbour with Yaletown lifestyle and joga pants. Brace yourselves.

Industry within the City continues to die for that very reason. A lot of industry is moving out of South Van and Richmond this year. This is why I believe the Port may one day fully move operations outside of the City. Actually, there are many signs that seems to suggest this may happen in the future.

Like their proposed expansion?

Fighting to keep industrial land in the face of rising land prices is important, but the port isn't leaving the city.

Tell that to Vision and their Sierra Club sugar daddies.

How many towers do you think concord will be able to fit on the plot and what do you think the max height will be?

Last I heard, this land is designated industrial use only. Not sure what Concord is planning, but they don't do industrial.
