not bad. it's kinda cheesy given its location and that it's relatively throwback in its design, but the fact that the arches are open and there's a modern "top" to it are decent. it's stupid that there will be two huge parking lots on either side of the walkway between the 7 train and the entrance of the ballpark. overall though, it's an ok design.

jeez, in thinking about it, the NL east is really shitty for stadiums considering its participants. new york, philadelphia, washington, atlanta and miami, and yet every last one of them is suburbanesque. ironically, atlanta's is currently the most urban of them, but at least NY, philly and DC have transit stations. (does miami?) and, DC's new ballpark should be nice.

now that shea will be gone, what will be the worst ballpark in baseball? oakland's?

Haven't thought about that one.

Oakland is supposed to be building a new stadium in Freemont, CA. Don't know how solid this proposal is, but that's the plan for now.
The worst stadium will probably be Tampa Bay's dome. Minnesota's dome is awful too, but they have a proposal for a new ballpark also. As far as I know, Tampa has no proposal for a new ballpark.

'Citi' feeling like home
It's early, but so far things on schedule as new Mets park is built

BY DAVID LENNON
February 9, 2007

Standing in the middle of a windswept dirt lot, with a wind chill in the teens, it was difficult to imagine David Wright or Jose Reyes occupying this very spot on Opening Day of the 2009 season.

But that's the timetable for Citi Field, and with an iron-and-steel framework slowly rising beyond the outfield wall of Shea Stadium, Mets COO Jeff Wilpon said yesterday that the project is right on schedule.

"There's no reason it's not going to be great," said the enthusiastic Wilpon, who led a group of reporters through the construction site. "All the seats are going to be better. You're going to be closer to the field. The sight lines are going to be better. It's just so vast right now, it's barely taking shape."

The only distinguishable part of the 45,000-seat stadium, which was inspired by Ebbets Field, is the first segment of the rightfield concourse. An elevated steel framework already is in place, giving visitors who climbed the tower a feel of the eventual sight lines from that vantage point.

When the ballpark is finished, that concourse will stretch around the inside of the stadium, providing a 360-degree view of the field, much like Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Wilpon also pointed out the different materials that will give the stadium its character, from the brick that will line the exterior to the faux limestone blocks and gray-accented windows.

Wilpon and a group of Mets officials visited a number of stadiums before working with HOK Sport to design Citi Field, which has borrowed various details from the firm's previous projects, such as Pittsburgh's PNC Park, Baltimore's Camden Yards and the new Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

At this point, Wilpon said the ballpark is "within one percent" of its estimated $600-million budget, and it won't be long before fans can get a better feel for the stadium itself - just by watching the construction from their seats at Shea.

"Knock on wood," Wilpon said. "Everything has gone as planned."

It's coming along nicely. I have to say, although I'm not a Mets's fan, I'm a little envious of this gorgeous stadium they're getting, though ours is great too. I guess the town is big enough for both, there were once three teams here.

Shea Stadium Trivia:

Designed to be expandable to 90,000 seats.
Right-center scoreboard is one of largest in the majors, 175 feet long and 86 feet high with Bulova clock on top, about 25 feet behind the outfield fence.
Behind the fence in center, just to the right of the 410 mark, is a Mets Magic Top Hat. When a Met hits a homer, a red Big Apple rises out of the black top hat, which actually looks more like a big kettle.
Worst visibility for hitters in the majors.
Churchlike spire beyond center-field fence formerly graced by "Serval Zippers" sign.
Christened April 16, 1964, with Dodgers Holy Water from the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn and Giants Holy Water from the Harlem River at the exact location where it passed the old Polo Grounds.
The only All-Star game to be played at Shea Stadium was in 1964, its inaugural season.
The Beatles played before 53,275 fans in August 1965 and again in August 1966.
The New York Yankees played there from April 6, 1974, to September 28, 1975 while Yankee Stadium was renovated.

The stadium was not always painted blue (like it is now), it was mostly orange, with multi color tiles on its walls...

I don't know man it's kind of an ugly purple color if you ask me.
