Southwest Fitness Thread

I couldn't find any discussion here on the board already going so I thought I'd start one. I'm actually curious as I don't know there are many fitness heads on this board, guess we'll find out!

I've been a pretty die hard mountain biker for about a decade now but just got into road cycling and love it. Been doing about 20 miles a day and am thinking about commuting to work (downtown to Paradise Valley ~12 miles.)

some pics for looks:

My XC Race bike. Weighs in just under 21lbs with all the carbon bits and pieces. Just about 23lbs when the CF is switched out for usual aluminum.

And my new toy the Fuji Roubaix. I get from 7th and Washington to Mill and University in about 30 minutes on it... very fast.

Anyone else with any outdoor related hobbies? Hiking? Biking? Running? Sports? Crazy diets?

I just hiked Squaw Peak this morning, very nice.

I've been very depressed since my dog I've had for 15 years died Saturday morning, so I'm surprised I found the motivation to go out and tackle a mountain today. I feel better, though.

I usually bike and hike at least twice per week.

ever need a hiking buddy lmk. I love to do trail 1A at squaw peak both on bike and on foot, though some of the terrain on that trail is tough on a lightweight hardtail. Summit gets too crowded for my taste.

Sucks about the dog. I lost my friend a few years ago from overexerting himself. Took a long time to get over it, but I realized that he provided a lot of great memories and good times. Just try to think of the good.

Don, so sorry for your loss. I've lost many a dog over the years and the most recent one back in June. It's always hard, but just remember what a good life you gave them. Someday, you'll be ready again.

I've been hiking more lately. My favorite is Squaw Peak. My fiance and I did that on Tuesday, then we did one of the Phoenix Mtn Preserves Mtn (off of 40th street) on Saturday. We are (along with a few friends) planning to do the Seven Summit thing next year.

I also play basketball 1 or 2 times per week. Then spin class once a week.

^ Thanks, guys, he was a most amazing, intelligent dog. I had him for almost 15 years. He was run over by a car Saturday morning on Glendale Avenue. Needless to say, I'm devastated, and barely functioning right now. He walked on the furniture and stole food from people in such a hilarious manner. He was so smart, and even at his advanced age, he still ran around like a 2-year old puppy.

Back to the thread topic, my bicycle is just a standard cheap full suspension bike. As for hiking, I tend to wear retro (short) shorts for same; most of you couldn't stand to be seen with me.

^ Okay, you've been warned.

I go hiking at all sorts of weird times. Probably my next hike will be this afternoon or Wed. morning/afternoon.

I own a Motobecane mountain bike. When I lived in AZ, I used to ride the Desert Classic trail along south facing slope of South Mountain. Absolutely beautiful trail and great views of Ahwatukee!

I also biked along bike lanes, primarily in Tempe. I'd bike up College Ave, cross over the 60 frwy pedestrian bridge, cut through ASU, to Tempe Town Lake and up Indian Bend Wash to McCormick Ranch area and then back down to my place in Tempe. That was a workout, especially on a mountain bike!

Just got done running 4 miles. Not hard but this is the longest I've gone without running (15 days!) Between July and October I probably ran about 500 miles in total. I can run a mile in 5:30 and I'm currently working on lowering my time to 5 minutes flat. Anyone else like to run like me?
