Look at how much larger Cincinnati is than Nashville, which are now MSAs of a similar size. The adjacent Dayton MSA probably accounts for most of Cincinnati's advantage.

Ha! That's because at 50 miles out, your sweep captures most of the juicy parts of both Big D and the DFW metro. It just misses the Plano/Frisco corridor, but it gets most everything else.

New Orleans and Baton Rouge are missing.

New Orleans = $41.7 billion (equivalent to Virginia Beach)
Baton Rouge = $28.7 billion (places it between Rochester and Honolulu)

For shits and giggles...75 mile radius of New Orleans incorporates nearly all of both metro areas.

New Orleans/Baton Rouge = $69.4 billion (close to the same size as San Antonio)

For consistency's sake, though, if you're gonna combine New Orleans with Baton Rouge, then you'd rightly have to combine San Antonio with Austin. Both city pairs are around 75 miles away from each other, downtown-to-downtown as the crow flies.

Detroit and Cleveland would probably get a big boost too, since they are within a 100-mile radius of each other.

the 100 mile radius mark is pretty meaningless in the real world, at least for discussing "cities" IMO.

a 100 mile radius is over 31,000 sq. miles, roughly the area of mid-sized US states like Maine or Indiana.

a 100 mile radius around Columbus takes up like 80% of the state of ohio.

referencing such a VAST area back to an individual city doesn't make much sense to me.
