.
My Father came to Edmonton to work on the Fed building. We were told stories of some of the issues. Like, the designers planned on having opening windows for ventilation. Not knowing how windy it gets. when the windows were opened papers were blown off the desks. To fix that they installed glass along the lower edge of the windows to deflect the wind up. A few years ago as the renovations began, the contractors had a tour of the facility. and there were those glass panels. I believe they are still in place.

My sister in law works on the upper floor now. and I have been in a few times since they reopened it.

Another story was that when it was designed NFLD was not part of Canada yet. They did not have the coat of arms when construction started. Apparently MacDonald contacted Joey Smallwood and got a copy of the coat of arms and had it added.

Mississauga's City Hall is incredibly lousy:

But I quite like Vaughan’s. As seen in a Handmaids Tale.

Vaughn's City Hall is pretty nice for a modern building.

The York Region Administrative Centre is pretty cool given it's location. Designed by Douglas Cardinal who was also responsible for the Museum of History (Civilization) in Gatineau

The location / setting leaves a bit to be desired, though...

And the sea of parking on the other side of the building.

I've never seen the Dominion Public Building in London before... does it know it has a cousin in Winnipeg?

Winnipeg got kind of hosed with our City Hall. It was built a few years pre-amalgamation, so it was designed to house a much smaller council and civic administration than what it ended up with. So instead of a grand modernist-style City Hall, we ended up with a nice but fairly small and modest complex with numerous civic departments shunted off into nearby office buildings instead as the city grew post-amalgamation.

Here's how it looked shortly after it was built:

DC also did the St Albert City Hall and Spruce Grove City Hall.

I can't access my flickR account today so this post will have to do.

Calgary doesn't have a super impressive stock of government buildings, but a few notable ones are...

Calgary City Hall - 108 years old - Notability: the only original city hall left standing of all the major prairie cities, clock tower clock is one of only 6 ever built, the building is currently undergoing a $35 million restoration, still functions as the offices of the Mayor of Calgary and the councillors.

Macdougall Centre - Government of Alberta facility - 111 years old - Notability: basically this is where the party would be if Alberta ever split into two provinces, it would be the new legislative assembly in the south, currently functions sort of as an auxiliary meeting place for the southern part of the caucus if they're not needed in Edmonton or whatever, was originally the first teachers college in Alberta.

Calgary Courts Centre - Notability: largest courthouse in Canada, jaw-droppingly hideous application of spandrel

Calgary Public Building/Jack Singer Concert Hall - Municipal Government Building and performing arts centre - 88 years old - Notability: partially houses a large concert hall, home of the widely acclaimed Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra

The Public Building has long been one of my Calgary favourites, despite its sort of awkward proportions. According to Trevor Boddy in his book Modern Architecture in Alberta, a British theatre consultants report from 1979 disagreed and derided it as being as "another third rate example of colonial architecture" which is kind of hilariously mean.

Sort of awkward? When I find architecture like this I just tell myself the stupidity of the proportions and placement of features was on purpose. The architect was having fun.

Although, if we're going to fantasize, that would be a very handsome building if it were about 20 storeys taller.

Moncton City Hall:

Federal Building Complex on Main Street:

The building on the right is our "Dominion Public Building". The building in the middle is an annex to the Dominion Public Building. The building on the left is the Avenir Centre, an 8800 seat arena.

Montreal city hall is closed for the next 3 years due to renovations. City will meet in next door at the Lucien-Saulnier building, an old courthouse.

I think I prefer the Lucien-Saulnier building over City Hall.

Well, to be fair, it does look like it could be a city hall in about any city.
