Highest in a number of years yes. Rate of around 1.8 per 100,000.

Some years in the recent past the total was below 30, maybe 27-28 IIRC.

While Surrey gets the bad rep, it's actually Langley and Coquitlam with the highest murder rates at 5.4 and 5.3/100,000 respectively (versus Surrey's rate of 3.1/100,000). Abbotsford, Chilliwack, and Nanaimo are also all around the 5/100,000 range.

Montréal 1

A young man killed his mother who was in her 60s.

A significant share of Montreal's murders are domestic.

Pretty sure there are several Canadian cities with more than 1 at this point.

Regina is still at zero this year and last year was the lowest in a few years.

Hopefully not just a lull last year, but an actual drop off. Regina's number for last year is somewhere between 6 and 8. I have read conflicting numbers from a few sources, but that is way down from the 12 in 2020 and 15 in 2021.

Ottawa has had its first. Stabbing in the south end. Sounds like a fight between tough guys.

Apparently the guy accused of killing that CBC guy in Toronto is already out on bail.

Also not murder cases but I have seen a couple of news stories this week about convicted rapists in Québec being allowed to serve their jail sentences at home.

Apparently changes in the law (Bill C-5?) now allow this.

I think he was out on bail for a previous violent offence.
