Speaking of pickup trucks I saw one almost hit a family at a crosswalk cutting me off turning left at a light an hour ago.

Well the street preacher likely doesn't have good mental health.

This plaza in Richmond Hill was never going to look good whether the signs are gaudy or not unless it underwent a complete exterior reno. It's an old rundown plaza and so I don't mind the colour added by the signs but the signs are just so damn big and jumbled up together.

I would expect to see this plaza somewhere in North York, not Richmond Hill. It's the only one like it that I've seen in RH.

I dunno. I've seen a tonne of outrage over that story, both when it happened, and now after the father's suicide.

I'm not outraged over truck nuts and MAGA flags, I just assume that the people in the vehicles are the sorts of people who put truck nuts on their car and wave MAGA flags, which is apparently totally unreasonable to some people in this thread.

Still not an architectural faux pas though is it?

Really? That's absolutely dominated the Toronto social media sphere and a large part of what I've heard in day to day conversation (current events related) over the past few days. It's causing a MASSIVE amount of outrage.

If it's not as prevalent in mainstream media elsewhere I can think of at least one plausible reason. The same one why the "Muzzo" name features prominent on hospital wings and other public infrastructure...

Now that I think of it. I don't think I've ever been to Richmond Hill

At least it's fairly compact with parking directly off the street and no boulevards or drive aisles.
I think a uniform sign height would go a long way to looking less jumbled, but of course run-down is always going to look run down.

They're definitely ugly, but I rather like those old plazas. Aside from being one of the last vestiges of cheap, independent retail establishments they're at least a bit more urban than the standard modern big-box stuff. They also tend to be first on the chopping block for redevelopment.

Indeed.

They are the North American version of little food stalls and businesses.

Unlike big-box, they’re more varied, less homogeneous. They have hidden gems for food too.

They ain’t pretty, but they’re functional. Beats the enclosed mall by a mile.

^ They kept all the sumptuous luxury for the inside, this is what the interior looks like

Couple from York, TO.

For the second I don't think the roof matches the house. And for what was there before, the driveway/yard situation, along with the neighbours, looked interesting to me.

WTF is with those yards/driveways??? Not only are they weird and super deep, but they looks gross....particularly when you consider what those houses probably cost.

some really grotty looking homes in York, especially given what I imagine would be very high housing prices. Shacks without the stacks.

If you read back farther in the thread, I promised esquire that I would take a photo of this truck which resides on my street (in Aylmer, QC for those who don't know).

I actually know the guy.. or did, about a decade ago when he was a little kid. He's from the Pontiac and doesn't know a lick of French.

Large portions of York were known for a time as the "Shack Lands" so this is literally true. https://quillandquire.com/review/the...%20in%20Canada.

Lauren Harris of the Group of Seven even had some paintings of it!
