Fascinating to hear Rockford is a Midwestern hub for that. In that situation, they also would need inexpensive hotel rooms, so downtown Chicago might not be a competitive option.

I never knew about the Barclays Center issues. It sounds like their problems are rooted in having used PVC instead of steel pipes for their ice surface. I wonder if that was just a greedy materials/labor cost decision, or whether something intrinsic about the floor slab physically precluded using steel.

Yes, Allstate Arena hosts ice shows in addition to professional hockey - but often only half capacity is filled.

I really hope that angled line that seperates the glass colors along the east/west sides is a lit up at night like in the original render.

WOW! This tower is stunning already. I love the color of the glass. Looks brilliant on a gloomy day!

It looks like something you'd expect to see on the Vegas Strip.

Nah, the hotels in Vegas are more interesting.

Probably part of the plan, they figured McCormick's biggest rival is Vegas, so make it more Vegas-y. Only the photos of Vegas they used were from like 1993.

Those look like some healthy sized rooms on the upper floors. The one bedroom suites at their Washington hotel are 750 sq feet.

^ So there it is - the moment where the far South Loop skyline gets pierced and lifted. Has this now become the tallest thing south of 13th Street?

Interesting vantage point by the way, I wonder where it is - high up 235 W VB or thereabouts?

Ah. For a sec forgot about that cluster of tall residential buildings this far west. But there they still are, the groundbreaking 80s megadevelopment, immortalized in Ferris Bueller and other places, an early seed to the SCB style, and now pretty much centrally located. One small part of Chicago's urban history.
