Everyone is going to have a different opinion here but can we just back up and agree that this is about as weird as they come? I mean look at that thing. How does something that convoluted even get imagined up?

The facade articulation is also very weird. A bunch of random geometry added or subtracted in plan then extruded up for an arbitrary height? That doesn't look nice. What are they going for?

It’s weird. It’s different. New York needs it. I’d take this over another boring, glass box (witness the lower half) any day of the week. The bonus? What’s expected to be an outstanding observation deck, and yet another way to view this great skyline. Book me, I’m there.

Way too tacky looking for NYC. And I bet they value-engineer the facade to make it even worse. I doubt that it will age well. Sort of would perhaps work for a sunbelt city with an indistinct skyline, like Dallas before they got the Reunion center ball, but not NYC.

This is make-or-break IMH(onset)O under two conditions:

1. The facade material absolutely *must* be top-quality, especially how the’ve apparently dealt with the surface above the first (whatever they call a 360 degree setback).

2. If they’re gonna keep that extra cantilever on the far side of the render, it should be integrated with the rest of the structure in a way that doesn’t create an illusion of poor massing.

I *do* like the experimentation with angularity…as if such a thing doesn’t happen enough already.

But yeah, this tower needs a facade that rivals any of Melbourne’s best offerings for it to *seriously* knock it out of the park, almost regardless of the massing.

Well, on the New York skyline, this tower will be barely noticeable, and the skyline can afford it. As for the facade, I don't see why it would age any worse than any other building. And how can you imagine something you haven't even seen yet being value engineered?

It reminds me of the short 1960's building in this picture. I have seen other similar ones but can't currently place where, as I'm not sure if any still serve their original purpose.

Telephone Switching Centers. NYC has an AT&T one with an antenna tower like that too.
