Overall violent crime rates in NYC for July 2021 are trending to be the lowest in recorded history (records go back to the late 1950's). Also, subway crime is trending to near record-lows (granted, there are fewer riding transit during the pandemic).
So the reality is that the nation's largest city currently has the lowest crime rates ever recorded. Guarantee this news won't make any impact on the "American cities are violent hellholes" narrative.
Problem is, crime rates only include the reported crimes, they don't include the unreported crimes. The police forces and the justice system have lost more and more of their power over time because of the Left, and it is still ongoing, so it's no surprise that the reported crime rates in many Left-leaning places like NYC have been dropping also. You see can it in Canadian cities as well, a country that doesn't even have the death penalty anymore, punishment for crimes is minimal, the justice system has become so weak that many people don't even bother to report crimes now. So the reported crime rates gives Canadian cities the appearance of being safer than American cities, but the unreported crimes would tell a different story.

Such a crazy narrative is quite useful, actually. When the data reflects your worldview, you can believe it, and when it doesn't, you can claim "fakenews".
The idea that murders and other violent crimes are hidden, and that the public no longer wishes to make insurance claims, they'll just let their belongings disappear, is insane, BTW.

While, as a rule of thumb, most of us don't want to be seen agreeing with Crawford........
He happens to be right this time.

This is a statement that borders the clinical definition of insanity.
Precisely how many dead bodies do you think the police are overlooking or misclassifying as death by natural causes when it isn't so?
Small crime is almost always on a proportionate line to more serious crime.
If you can accurately track murders and serious assaults, and shootings, you have a pretty good idea what's going on with 'lesser' crimes as well.

Also, while its true that Canada's incarceration rate is well below that of the U.S. (Highest vs #143 in the world according to Wikipedia)
Its also true that Canada incarcerates more people per capita than France, Belgium, Italy and almost the exact same as South Korea.

What is your source of information?
How has your source compiled July 2021 data when July hasn't ended?
The last source of data compiled May 2021 indicated a huge increase in violent crimes.
lol just discovered this thread... still trying to figure out what the fun is in doing this haha, it's like the report-your-city's-weather-today thread, except one can't even draw any conclusions from monthly or yearly fluctuations in such tiny sets of data.
Vancouver has 11 homicides this year, up 38% from last year's 8 - it's an epidemic! - FOX News

In regards to crime other than homicide... Absolutely, 100% true. In California, since the passage of prop 47 and similar bs progressive social justice nonsense laws in 2014, plenty of things are no longer reported or even called in, such as shoplifting, which is now basically never stopped. If the items stolen are under $950, nothing can be done and cops aren't even called

Minnesota reported the most murders in state history last year (in raw numbers):
Quote:
In 2020 there were 222 homicides reported for the state. Of that number, 36 offenses were ruled negligent and 1 were ruled unfounded or justifiable, yielding a total of 185 criminal homicide victims.
That's a 58.1% increase from the 117 murders reported in 2019. As a matter of rate, that's 3.3 per 100,000, which is the highest since Minnesota hit 3.6 in 1996 (the all-time high was 3.9 in 1995). In fact, this is only the 6th time that the rate has hit 3.3+ in state history. The rate was 3.3 in 1975, 3.3 in 1992, 3.4 in 1993, then 1995/1996, and now 2020. Even though Minnesota's median age appears to be significantly higher in 2020 than any of those other years (rising age strongly correlates to LOWER murder rates).
Hey Camelback...you can find weekly updates at https://compstat.nypdonline.org/ Notice Crawford was saying JULY. As the city reopened, crime has been gradually declining since the peak earlier this year. Sorry if this doesn't fit your narrative of NY being a crime ridden hellscape.
Hi aaronevill, I hope NYC violent crime decreases. (I really don't care, because I don't live there)
Downward trends are good. You can cut those trends into weeks and days. However, the last few years the trend has been up, and was exasperated by covid-19, the exodus and other nonsensical city policies.
I hope that NYC bucks that latest downward trend and gets back to where it was.

You don’t live here. Therefore you apparently “don’t care”. That’s an awful
Lot of text for someone indifferent. Are you sure you don’t care? I don’t bother commenting on issues I don’t care about - so genuinely curious. Cheers.

I care about the accuracy of what's being reported, so I responded to a post that came to a conclusion crime is near record lows, which is obviously misleading.
On 7/27/2021:
"violent crime rates in NYC for July 2021 are trending to be the lowest in recorded history"
"So the reality is that the nation's largest city currently has the lowest crime rates ever recorded"
The last full month of information to be tallied, June 2021 from June 2020
Murders up +21
Rapes up +32
Felony assaults up +645
Just a general comment: it's a bit surreal to read posts talking about plummeting crime rates probably based on kids being less likely to get their bikes stolen, or fewer bags of chips getting shoplifted...
