Only the short tower on the right side was built, so the version today isn't even 1/3 of what was planned. If built to the original plan, I believe the middle tower would be close to the same height as the Renaissance Center's center tower.
That would have been so ridiculously awesome if it had been fully built. Hell, even the portion that was built is pretty damn awesome all by itself, but the whole complex would've been something else.

Here are two of the tallest pre-war Chicago proposals that unfortunately never got off the drawing boards:

Crane Tower | 1,022 FT | 75 Floors

Apparel Mart | 835 FT | 75 Floors

Man, what could've been.......

Metlife's North Building (11 Madison Ave) was supposed to be 100 stories but construction stopped at 30 due to the Depression so it looks like a giant stump.

Or you know what, screw it: Make the Carew Tower taller than QCS.
Absolutely...Carew Tower should be at least 750 feet, same height as rival Terminal Tower in Cleveland. Can't let Cleveland show up Cincy!

U.S. Bank & Salesforce

Both U.S. Bank tower (in L.A.) and Salesforce tower (in S.F.) should have been 1250', same height as Empire State Building.

going back and researching old unbuilt chicago skyscrapers, it's probably appropriate to revisit this comment from the OP:

not quite super tall status, but at 70 floors/792', the River City triplets would've been a good deal taller than the Marina City twins at 588'.

that one hurts...st louis built some decent square footage behind deco but nothing was enough to really define the downtown skyline. midtown and the central west end both got deco skyine hats but not downtown.

speaking of stumpy deco, i always thought the proportions of this beast could have easily supported a much taller central tower.

but that might've also upset some of its beastliness. i mean, it has nearly as much SF as the sears tower, but only stands 340' tall.

LARGE AND IN CHARGE!

The Merchandise Mart in Chicago is absolutely massive. Pics don't really do justice conveying it's sense of scale.

I love the Merchandise Mart. That used to be my el stop on the way to work. One of my favorite buildings in Chicago.

Ever notice that the Merchandise Mart footprint looks like a sand crawler?

In Chicago, Two Prudential Plaza shouldve been 1.5 times as tall, and the Crain Communications Building should've been twice as tall. Particularly the latter. It almost hurts how short CC is.. given that its a focal point right on the corner of the park
