Nice to see the first step in the inevitable transformation of Pembina Highway into Winnipeg's Grand Concourse continuing to take shape.

This project looks to be officially starting. Pre-Con has their "bannering" up along all of the construction fencing and there is now a mobile crane on site.

It's going to be pretty cool to see this taking shape. This stretch of Pembina, which feels stuck in time in circa 1970, could be so much more than it is. Projects like this one will help to get it there.

Hope the momentum spreads to the stretch between Jubilee and confusion corner. An area that close to the city centre could support something a lot more valuable than used car lots

What's the address for this project?

I believe that's where the Cambridge Hotel now sits.

^ It's the site of the old Pembina Hotel at Pembina and Jubilee.

I stand corrected. I thought the Pembina Hotel project had already started. In the rendering I thought that building on the far right was Vic's Supermarket.

Not quite yet. The Cambridge still stands, though one of the houses on Merriam purchased by the condo development that's set to replace it was knocked down before last winter. Nihilism has set in at the Cambridge, with the vendor no longer having functional AC with no plans to repair it, according to the poor employee melting at the till last week.

Ah okay thank you. Nice to see some real density getting added along Pembina. Hopefully the parkade isn't visible from the front.

Construction equipment is now on site of the old Pemby Hotel. Looks like they are getting ready to start any day.

I had occasion to drive up Pembina the other day and it got me wondering... how does such an old street have so little urban character? Even the big old stroads like the suburban parts of Portage, Main, Henderson, etc. still have some of that in spite of all the traffic. Pembina has so few buildings built to the sidewalk, just lots of drive-up buildings, parking lots, garages, etc. Especially on the oldest stretch from Confusion Corner to Jubilee. How did that happen?

I agree..However, Winnipeggers love it. Bland beige.
A sea of parking.Concrete lots or miles.
Little regard for aesthetics.
