It's a great job opportunity so Bay Area here I come! Since it's in the East Bay, it makes sense to live in the East Bay. And since I've lived in relatively urban walkable environments for the last 13 years, I'm focusing on Oakland rather than Fremont (which is fine but I much prefer a more walkable urban environment, hence Oakland is the best option in the East Bay).

^^ Well, good choice! Oakland has honestly changed A LOT in the past 10 years. Their downtown core is continuously evolving but unfortunately, we don't have many eyes there compared to SF and SJ.

Definitely check out:
- Lake Merritt
- Jack London Square
- Alameda (Downtown or grab a drink around Rock Wall Wine Company)
- Walk around UC Berkeley like a student
- Indian Rock Park in Berkeley (Safe area)
- Grizzly Peak (part of UC Berkeley Campus. On top of a hill)
- Go around Marina Park in San Leandro

If you need anymore places to check out, I have A TON! Also, I'm not sure how it's like in your area of Chicago, but do not leave your belongings in your car. There has been a spike in car break ins in the past 2 years but it kinda slowed down cuz of covid. Just a heads up!

As far as places to live that are urban and walkable in Oakland, I'd take a look at the following areas:

Downtown (Chinatown, Lakeside, Jack London Square)
Uptown
Temescal
Rockridge
Grand Lake

Yeah, I'll back pretty much all those. My GF lived in Uptown for some time, and we've been around all those, and they're all nice and walkable. They're not of the size and scale of SF, but that's not to say they're not great areas. If you also go to SF a lot, Chinatown, Lakeside, and Uptown have very convenient BART access.

Yup downtown would be my number one choice since it’s more urban over a larger area, close to BART, and walking distance to the Lake as well as all the other districts mentioned since it’s most Central.

I've been out in the Bay Area many times over the last 6 years and mostly stayed with friends who live in Oakland, so fortunately I'm relatively familiar with the area. Most of those neighborhoods are very much at the top of my search list. Thanks all!

Houston based Hines moving forward on 39-story - 622 ft. skyscraper at 415 20th Street in Downtown Oakland

Hines is in the process of completing their environmental impact report for the first true skyscraper to be built in downtown Oakland.

The majority of international organisations, such as the CTBUH and Emporis, define a skyscraper as a building that reaches or exceeds the height of 150 metres.or 492 feet.

Hines acquired the property at 415 20th Street for $36 million in June, 2019 or roughly $434 per square foot, according to sources with direct knowledge of the transaction. The seller of the property was the University of California Regents who viewed the property as excess corporate real estate. The public entity will be moving into the new office building, The Key at 12th which is currently under construction in downtown Oakland in the near future. Here are some renderings from the Oakland City Planning Dept. files for the planned 622 foot skyscraper:

Looks like there's parking just south of the Toll Plaza.

And the foundation for the 4th residential building is being poured now, in a wedge of a parcel close to 880. Between these 4 projects there will be about 1,000 residential units. Only 2,500 or so to go.

I took my car in for service today, so had another chance to walk around town and take some pictures of what's under construction.

Here is new construction along Valdez, north of Grand. The building on the right was burned down several years ago when it was almost completely framed, presumably by anti-gentrification activists:

This is the VESPR Apartments on 27th:

Several views of 2016 Telegraph Avenue, which is across the street from Oakland's first Shake Shack. (Shake Shack opened during the pandemic in the old Capwell's Department Store building.)

Next, 1721 Webster, which looks to be almost complete:

Several views of the Atlas Apartments at 1314 Franklin, which is now complete and open. This building replaced a decrepit parking garage that the city of Oakland built for downtown merchants during the rise of suburban shopping malls in the 50s and 60s:

View from Broadway:

Next up, the Key Route Building, which is now going to be headquarters for Credit Karma. First, the back of the new building as seen from the side of the Tribune Tower:

View toward the Key Route building from the 12th St. BART Station on Broadway:

I saw this crane in the distance when walking past City Hall. I couldn't place what building it was:

IMG_20210118_115203 by rbehs, on Flickr

It's the Marriott Hotels going up at 1431 Jefferson (the renderings show quite an ugly building):

The 17th & Broadway building appears to be complete:

My car was done early, so that's the end of the tour:
