This area isn't exactly in the 39° North District, but it illustrates St. Louis' growth, prowess and importance in the agriculture sector.

The Waterways Journal: ST. LOUIS: AMERICA’S AG COAST

By David Murray
October 16, 2017

A stretch of the Mississippi River in and near St. Louis, Mo., has become America’s center of gravity for grain-handling for transit and export. It is so dense with grain- and fertilizer-handling facilities that can handle all transportation modes—truck, rail and barge—that it is being called “America’s Agriculture Coast” or “Ag Coast.”

The St. Louis region’s central position was well documented in a recent report by the Corps of Engineers. Comparing the Port of Metropolitan St. Louis, a 70-mile system that includes nearby regional ports, the Corps ranked St. Louis regional ports as the most efficient inland port district in terms of tons moved per river mile during 2015, the most recent year for which final numbers were available.

The St. Louis region’s barge industry handled 500,000 tons per mile. Its closest competitors, the Port of Huntington-Tri-State in West Virginia and Ports of Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky, ranked second and third respectively, moving more than 200,000 tons per river mile, making the St. Louis region 2-1/2 times more efficient with its river usage than its closest competitors.

To put it another way, the St. Louis region’s ports and river terminals captured one-third of all freight traffic along the section of the Mississippi River from Minneapolis, Minn., to the Ohio River near Cairo, Ill. The 70-mile St. Louis regional port system represents 8 percent of this 855-mile section of the river, yet carried one-third of the total 2015 freight. Its mix of grain-handling and logistics assets on the Mississippi River is now so concentrated that it has no real rivals in the U.S.; its only peer competitors are a few other regions elsewhere in the globe, in Brazil and the Black Sea coast.

After an exhaustive competition, Brazilian firm's North American HQs will head to 39° North District in St. Louis.

Article #1: Brazilian Sugarcane firm picks St. Louis over RTP for North American research HQ (05/02/18)

One of the world’s largest sugarcane technology firms has picked St. Louis over the Triangle for its North American research headquarters.

Brazil-based ag-tech Centro de Tecnologia Canavieira (CTC) had seriously considered Research Triangle Park, but announced its final pick Wednesday.

“After visiting multiple sites, our encounter with St. Louis was the perfect environment to attract talent, and access unique infrastructures and transformation expertise for our bold start in the U.S.,” stated Diego Henrique Souza Ferres, head of research and development. “CTC Genomics will advance techniques to develop sugar cane and accelerate development and yield gains over time.”

Initially, the company said it will employ 10 to 15 people.

Article #2: Centro de Tecnologia Canavieira, the world’s largest sugarcane technology company headquartered in São Paulo, will locate its North American research headquarters in St Louis (05/03/18)

CTC Genomics will focus on developing new platforms for sugarcane which will allow substantial quality and productivity gains. The company plans to initially employ 10-15 people in its BRDG Park location enabling them to access some of the Danforth Center’s state-of-the-art facilities including the Center’s Transformation Facility.

“After visiting multiple sites, our encounter with St. Louis was the perfect environment to attract talent, and access unique infrastructures and transformation expertise for our bold start in the U.S.,” said Diego Henrique Souza Ferres, Head of R&D. “CTC Genomics will advance techniques to develop sugar cane and accelerate development and yield gains over time.”

“The region’s strength in agriculture research and development, deep talent pool and access to critical research infrastructure enabled us to win this very competitive selection competition,” said Sam Fiorello, Danforth Center COO & BRDG Park president.

According to company officials, St. Louis has created a thriving agtech startup ecosystem through a combination of home grown startups and companies that chose to relocate here from around the globe. Several organizations worked together on the recruitment effort including GlobalSTL, BioSTL’s international company recruitment arm.

“St. Louis has a world-class constellation of plant science assets that is perfectly matched for what CTC needs to transform sugarcane, one of the most complex crops to develop. CTC leaders made a wise choice of placing their bet on St. Louis to help them make sugarcane a competitive and valuable crop for farmers and consumers,” said Vijay Chauhan, GlobalSTL lead.

Actual LIVING billboards of Kale, Collard Greens and Chard are growing along the highways St. Louis.

Now that Bayer has moved into the St. Louis region with the purchase of behemoth, Monsanto, Bayer is making strong inroads into the St. Louis region - including these cool billboards that are popping up around town - particularly along I-64.

Bayer's global headquarters for seeds and traits and the North American commercial headquarters are now based in St. Louis.

There will be shifts of personnel between St. Louis and Bayer's existing facilities in Germany and North Carolina — a process that will take a year to complete.

With the purchase of Monsanto, Bayer AG is now the world's largest agricultural seed and chemical supplier.

Bayer AG To Add 500 Jobs To Creve Coeur
By JACLYN DRISCOLL • JUL 16, 2019

Bayer AG plans to relocate 500 jobs to Creve Coeur and promises a total capital investment of $164 million for the state of Missouri.

The announcement, made on Tuesday from Missouri Gov. Mike Parson’s office, comes after Bayer decided to close its North American crop sciences headquarters in Raleigh, North Carolina. The 500 jobs in St. Louis will be a combination of transfers from that facility and new hires.

“In some cases where we’re transferring jobs in, it’ll be existing jobs that we need to continue our business today,” said Lisa Safarian, president of North America commercial operations at Bayer. “But as we continue to grow and develop, and especially move into the digital space, we’ll need new jobs.”

The average salary for the new jobs will be $110,000 annually. Bayer has also committed to retaining 4,400 jobs in the St. Louis region.

Agriculture giant Bunge to move world headquarters to St. Louis

Currently the company says about 525 employees work here, with capacity for about 750

Bunge's current America's HQ's in suburban Chesterfield

CHESTERFIELD (KMOX) -- A food and agriculture processing giant plans to set up global headquarters in the St. Louis area -- and this one should be a familar name.

Bunge North America has long been based in west St. Louis County. Late Tuesday, the company announced that Bunge's world headquarters would leave New York state and move to the "St. Louis metropolitan area."

This could add another notch to the region's Fortune 500 tally. Bunge ranks no. 247 on the global version of the list with about $42 billion in revenues.

Bunge CEO Gregory Heckman, in a statement, says St. Louis has become a hub for food, agriculture, animal health and plant science organizations and customers.

He says locating its head office in the midst of all this will help Bunge be smarter and more efficient.

"We are grateful to have called White Plains home for many years, and now look forward to the new growth and development opportunities which our expanded St. Louis presence will provide," Heckman wrote.

Bunge competes with the likes of Archer Daniels Midland and Cargill.

The world-renown Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis will start construction in January on a new $92 million visitor center.

The complex will replace the current center and give guests a larger, more accessible and streamlined place to start and stay for their visit.

The Jack C. Taylor Visitor Center is scheduled to open in spring 2022.

The Taylor (Enterprise Rent-A-Car) family donated “a lead gift” for the project, and the rest was privately funded.

The current Ridgway Visitor Center was built in 1982, meant to accommodate 250,000 visitors a year. Now, the garden welcomes nearly 1-million visitors annually.

The new building was designed by architect Ayers Saint Gross and landscape architect Michael Vergason. Alberici is managing construction. The entire project will be LEED-certified.

Visitors will first see new gardens in front of the building as well as wide pathways and more drop-off areas.

The center will include a lobby with a soaring, 50-foot ceiling that will serve as a beacon of sorts and be visible from Interstate 44.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will create their new nonprofit agricultural research institute in St. Louis.

Gates Foundation plans crop research center in St. Louis
Bryce Gray
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
01/29/20

ST. LOUIS — St. Louis’ crop science hub is set to get more crowded: The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is planning to launch a local nonprofit dedicated to research that helps farmers in the developing world.

The entity will be known as Gates Ag One, the foundation said recently. It aims to help small farmers in developing countries access affordable tools and technology “to sustainably improve crop productivity and adapt to the effects of climate change,” the Seattle-based foundation said last week.

The organization said it intends to locate Gates Ag One — formally titled Bill and Melinda Gates Agricultural Innovations — in the St. Louis region. Additional details were not immediately available.

Bill and Melinda Gates are not strangers to the area and its reputation for crop research. Their foundation has previously given grants to the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in Creve Coeur.

The foundation gave $6.1 million to the Danforth Center about three years ago for work to improve varieties of sorghum crops for small farmers. The center has also received Gates Foundation funding for research on cassava, a root vegetable that is a dominant food source in sub-Saharan Africa.
