Paris opens Metro Line 4 extension
Written by Keith Barrow | Monday, March 25, 2013

PARIS Transport Authority (RATP) opened the French capital's 303rd metro station on March 23 with the inauguration of the €185.3m southern extension of Line 4 to Mairie de Montrouge.

The 1.5km extension from Porte de Orléans is the first addition to Line 4 in more than 100 years and is expected to boost ridership on the line by around 37,900 passengers per day. The journey time between Mairie de Montrouge and the northern terminus at Porte de Clignancourt is around 30 minutes.

By the end of 2019, Line 4 will be extended a further 1.7 km to Bagneux with new stations at Verdun Sud and Bagneux.

Line 4 is the second-busiest Metro Line in Paris, carrying around 674,000 passengers per day.

RATP prepares the automation of the Paris metro line 4

RATP confirmed on Tuesday the automation metro project Porte de Clignancourt, Porte d'Orleans (Line 4), the second busiest line of the Paris metro.

After the commissioning of the line 14 of the Paris metro, fully automatic from the outset, and the conversion to driverless metro line 1 (Château de Vincennes - La Défense), RATP leaders are preparing to switch to turn (line 4 Porte de Clignancourt, Porte d'Orleans)! "This line is just as busy as line 1, said Pierre Mongin , CEO of RATP , to justify the automation project. We have absolutely no intention to automate all subway lines. However, the opportunity may arise when you need to replace the entire rolling line. "

The union of transport in Ile-de-France ( STIF ), which finances investments of the Parisian metro is favorable, said Pierre Mongin reminder that "line 4 has aged. Regularity is not great. Platforms are crowded. The installation of platform screen doors enhance security. It would be a sensible solution. " The process of social dialogue was initiated to prepare the future conversion of the line conductors 4.
http://www.lefigaro.fr/societes/2013...o-parisien.php

This was a big rumor of these last weekend that became official.
The signaling system of the line 4 has aged, nowaday there is almost not a single day without some trouble with the signaling in the line 4.

The line 4 has the worst performance of the network during rush hours.
The line 1 used to be one of the worst line but with the driverless operation, services has really improved.
The service on line 3 has also greatly improved with new CBTC system replacing the old ATO system.

(January-December 2012) with a comparison with the same period in 2011.

This indicator provides the percentage of the actual number of train running in rush hour with the service ordered.

Opening in mid 2014.

Châtelet
The corridor linking the line 14 with the line 4 and the RER is under in works.
Despite having being opened in 1998, it was in pretty bad state and the access and connection were undersized for the actual traffic.
Stairs to the line 4 are closed to be enlarged with new escalators, reopening in September 2014.

It is where are located the stairs linking with the line 4.

They removed the covering of the wall.

Yeah I remember the whole Chatelet-Les Halles complex was pretty dirty even for Paris. Glad they are sprucing it up.

Minato-ku, is there any list of Parisian lines by how crowded they are relative to capacity the way there are such lists for Tokyo?

I don't know any list, it is commonly thought that the most crowded part of the metro network is the northern part of line 13.

No, this corridor opened in 1998 with the line 14.
Walls with colorful 1970's mosaics are still there but not for long.

Cool. The parking they built back in the 70s is now convenient space to expand the RER station.

Tramway: Porte de Choisy - Orly Fer à Cheval (Number unknow, T9 or T10)
This tram will replace the bus line 183, one of the busiest in Paris with 17.1 million passengers in 2010 and 57,500 passengers in weekday.
The bus link Porte de Choisy with Orly airport but only a limited number of service go to the airport, the majority stop at Rouget de Lisle in Choisy-le-Roi or Mairie d'Orly.
The tram will only replace the section between Porte de Choisy and the town center of Orly.

Openening is planned for 2020.
80,000 passengers per day are planned for this tram

Comparison of the station between the 183 and the future tramway line.
Note thet comparison is between in the section that will be converted in tram.
Tram station name are provisional.

Red: existing station/undisplaced
Green: merged station (when two stations become a single one).
Yellow: displaced station

Porte de Choisy
There spots are considered for the station.
In my opinion the western one is the best, it would at the place of terminal stop of the line 183 and offers better connection with tram T3a (throught platform interchange) and metro line 7.

Tzen 5
Same sector that the Porte de Choisy-Orly tram but more in the east, closer to the Seine river bank.
"Tzen" is a name created by the STIF (organizing public transport authority of Greater Paris region) for the Bus rapid transit.
For the moment only one line is in service but four more are planned.

Tzen 5 will run between Bibliothèque François Mitterrand (M14/RER C) and Choisy le Roi.
It will follow more or less the RER C route but with a more local services, all those area are under in redevelopment, millions sqm of residential/offices/commercial space are planned.

Tzen 5
10.5 km
20 stops
50,000 passengers planned per day
Opening planned for 2020.

By 2030

Note, it is not notified in the map but Gare Ardoines will be serve by the new metro line 15 and it is a stop of the RER C

Choisy-le-Roi

Note TPO is the tramway of the previous post, the tram between Porte de Choisy (P for Paris) and Orly

I find funny to see that this bus line terminates 500m before Choisy le Roi RER station.
The thin red lines are the pedestrian path.

MF01 with new livery in service
The MF01 delivery for the line 5 is done and the delivery for trains for line 9 has begun but unlike the others these new trains have a new livery.
The STIF is the organizing public transport authority for Greater Paris region, while it was quite unkown and invisible, the authority decided to be quite visible everywhere and they are now imposing new livery where its name is quite visible with a grey color.

Unlike buses, suburban trains, the metro was spared until now.
The first MF01 with the new livery is the number 096, the operation on line 9 will begin in September before trains are tested on line 5.

MF01 096, the first with a new livery along with other MF01 in Bobigny yard.

This is here the MF01 097, the second one with a new livery.

Z50000.
After the H and P network, service of the Z50000 stock began on Transilien L.
For now, the Z50000 run on the short Saint-Lazare to Bécon-les-Bruyères local service (5.7km and five stops).

Z5000 at Bécon-les-Bruyères.

Z50000 of the L network have a shorter car in the middle because of the shorter platform.

RATP cleared to automate Paris metro Line 4
12 Jul 2013

FRANCE: The board of Ile de France transport authority STIF voted on July 10 to approve the conversion of Paris metro Line 4 to fully-automated operation, endorsing proposals submitted by operator RATP on June 28.

Carrying 740 000 passengers/day, the north-south Line 4 is the second-busiest metro line in Paris after east-west Line 1, where the conversion to unattended operation was completed in December 2012. The 12·1 km rubber-tyred line links Porte de Clignancourt with Mairie de Montrouge, serving 27 stations including the main line termini at Nord, Est and Montparnasse. It is the only line that interchanges with all other metro and RER routes in the city. A 1·7 km southern extension from Montrouge to Bagneux is currently under construction.

Work on Line 4 is expected to begin next year for completion in 2019. This will include the installation of half-height platform screen gates at all stations, as well as the ATO equipment. Total cost of the conversion is put at €256m, of which €100m will be provided by STIF.

Under RATP’s proposal, Line 4 will be operated by the existing fleet of driverless trainsets now used on the Météor automated Line 14, which are due to be replaced by new trains when that route is extended from Saint-Lazare to Mairie de Saint-Ouen. Line 14 currently has a mix of MP89CA trainsets supplied by Alstom for the opening of the line, augmented by a handful of MP05 sets of the type introduced on Line 1 during the automation of that route. Transferring these sets to Line 4 would in turn enable RATP to cascade the manually-driven MP89 sets which Line 4 inherited from Line 1 to replace older stock on other rubber-tyred routes.

Citing its experience on Line 1, RATP said the conversion of Line 4 to UTO would allow it to increase capacity, improve punctuality and the quality of service, as well as enhancing its ability to react to changing demand patterns. It would also improve safety, thanks to the introduction of the platform screen doors.

So instead of the end-of-the-line station being on its own, it'll be extended to a nearby hub that already has three lines?
12-17 years til completion is a bit long, but I guess with all the other new lines/extenstions already going on it can't just start now

For the moment Val de Fontenay has two lines (RER A and E) but in the future when the extension of line 1 will open, it will be also served by the T1 and metro line 15.
Val de Fontenay is going to become a big transit hub.
