The Never Ending Victoria BC Canada Photo Extravaganza

OK, that's quite the thread title to live up to - we'll try our best.

You don't see a lot of Victoria photos on SSP - so here's a thread you can check out some out before they get overwhelmed by so many other amazing pics of incredible cities around the world.

To start with the GreatScaper and I will post some recent photos and then add new ones every so often as well as post other 'found' Victoria photos to fill in the gaps. Until just a couple of months ago I actually thought the GreatScaper was dead or abducted by aliens - yet out out of the blue I saw some photos he posted on Flickr. Almost no one bothers with Victoria skyline shots, except for Scaper - can't wait to see what he posts! We actually met up a couple of weeks ago for a photo tour, some of which you'll see below. Ok, let's get into it!

I'll try to keep the narrative down, but feel free to ask questions - starting with some scene setting - Victoria is located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, metro population 400,000. While I don't take skylines, here's a few aerials (the first a few years old) from the 35 minute seaplane ride to Vancouver.

As you can see in the summer Victoria is very dry and arid.

Ok, and now for some recent photos in the days of COVID. Being the provincial capital of British Columbia (office jobs downtown) and a tourist centre isn't idea during a pandemic. As with everywhere the city is encouraging street parking outdoor seating in addition to existing sidewalk patios.

They really cut back these trees so severely that I think that they'll die, but they keep on coming back.

Additional roadside patio for the Bard and Banker pub - I like the stepped approach being on an incline, plus the effect of a room with the overhead beam and just two tables per section for social distancing.

Built in 1885 as the Bank of BC, and was a bank up until 1985. The two storey interior is gorgeous. Named the Bard and Banker, because famed poet Robert Service once worked here.

One day I'll have to do a proper tour, this is barely touching on downtown, and not even the inner harbour area. The neighbourhoods on the edge of downtown are a whole world themselves, just a peek for now:

Thanks for the fantastic set guys! One of the best small/mid-sized cities in the country and a worthy capital for BC. Great scale, great layering and progressive planning for active, bike and pedestrian friendly streets.

Ha! Actually and somewhat surprisingly.. no! My place doesn't show up until the fourth picture even though I'm just one block outside of the official downtown border.

Thanks for the comments, future posts won't be as overwhelming, lol.

Another good question - are you a reporter?

I feel I can be more honest here than in VV where I've been holding back my true feelings. Let's just say I'm very excited, and it should look fantastic from 40,000 feet. Unfortunately the Harbour Air planes with their dirty windows don't fly that high.

I really like the Telus Ocean building. I think it will be a great addition to that corner. It could be taller but all said I think it'll be awesome.

Dude, I have never seen this angle before. That's from the roof of Ross Place?

Edit: I take it back. I guess I must have seen those pics when you first posted them back in 2008. But it's sure not an angle we normally see.

I believe they were from the roof of Ross Place. I would love to get back on their but with Covid I don't think I would even try right now. The views would be so different today too.

I haven't been to Butchart Gardens in such a long time. It's funny you mentioned about it because I was thinking today that I would love to go before the end of summer and get some pictures. Hopefully it's still open right now.

Took a bunch of photos yesterday and in the past couple weeks in a rocky outcrop neighbourhood next to downtown - the Rockland neighbourhood in Victoria. I'll post more in the Victoria thread in Found photos, but for now here's a few.

It's nice to be able to step off a busy road and then be in a totally different world - with narrow stone lined roads in some areas, no sidewalks in some areas, and overgrown gardens with mansions hidden behind. Many of the larger homes have now been divided up into a dozen different living units, the truly wealthy prefer oceanside mansions.

The original Government House (where the Lieutenant Governor of BC resides) burned down decades ago, but is still a massive estate with gardens and wild meadows in the back overlooking the ocean). It's where William and Kate spent a week as their home base while touring BC and Prince George had his 6th birthday party, inviting some of the local kids.

For BC residents it was also the sight of some political drama on the night of June 29th, 2017

Ok, to keep this within the subject of skyline - the condo in the picture above can be seen at the upper right corner of this shot by Gary Hoyer. You can see the higher ground rising up.

It was a fun walk around James Bay with my friend Zoomer the other day. We took some photos and thought I would post some of mine though not as amazing as Zoomer's photos.
