news on crane crash from july 16 + pix

LOHUD (Lower Hudson?) news -- USA Today has an article dated Jan 20 2017 stating that the crane operators whose crane crashed onto the old bridge in July 2016 were fined $12,675. I'm sure they lost quite a bit more in loss of equipment.

The news story includes modern (January 2017) photos of the new spans.

Quote:
A preliminary test on more than 20 piers lasted just over an hour, according to information from the Thruway Authority.

The test confirmed that energy was being sent to more than 220 fixtures on the westbound Rockland approach.

Light-emitting-diodes — LEDs — are being used to illuminate the concrete piers and other parts of the bridge, including the eight towers and cable-stay system.

Tappan Zee Bridge: Stay cable installation done on new westbound span
Matt Coyne, Lohud.com

Quote:
Crews have finished installing the stay cables on the westbound span of the new Tappan Zee Bridge, the first portion of the bridge set to open later this year.

The last of the 96 stay cables, the long metal strands hung off the new bridge's main span towers to suspend the road deck over the deepest part of the Hudson River, was installed last week on the Rockland-bound span, leaving a small gap in the main span.

The Thruway Authority says that gap will be filled in with structural steel "in the coming weeks."

Once that is done, there will be an uninterrupted structure running from Tarrytown over the Hudson River to South Nyack.

Tappan Zee Bridge: Opening date Aug. 25 for one span announced, traffic patterns noted

Quote:
The first half of the Tappan Zee Bridge replacement will open Aug. 25.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo confirmed the date during an infrastructure-focused presentation to the Association for a Better New York in Manhattan Thursday morning.

"At the end of the day, my friends, it's very, very simple. We have a certain period of time on this Earth, and what the good book tells all of us is use your time to make this place a better place," said Cuomo.

The governor did not address the opening of the $3.9 billion bridge — now officially called the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge — directly, but the much-anticipated date was included in a slide as he pumped up his transportation plans for the region.

"We need to leave this state better than we found it and we're going to leave her safer, sweeter, kinder, cleaner and more secure than she's been before," the current governor said, with the opening date projected over his head. "We are on the road to making it happen."

The August 25 opening marks the beginning of the end for the old, 62-year-old Tappan Zee Bridge.

On the evening of Friday, Aug. 25, running into the next morning, the Thruway Authority will move all Rockland-bound traffic onto the new 96-foot-wide span. Westchester-bound traffic will stay on the bridge for "about a couple of months," the Thruway said, at which point it will shift over, too.

New York's $4 Billion Tappan Zee Bridge Project Set to Open to the Public

August, 2017
by Patrick Lynch

Quote:

The long-awaited replacement for New York City’s longest bridge, the Tappan Zee, is set to open to the public on Friday, announced Governor Andrew Cuomo.
After four years of construction, the first of the $4 billion dollar project’s twin two-span cable-stayed structures will welcome automobile as well as pedestrian
and bicycle traffic for the first time.

Once fully completed, the new bridge will include eight standard traffic lanes with an additional four lanes for breakdowns and emergency vehicles – a component
that the current bridge lacks, leading to frequent traffic issues and delays. According to the Governor’s Office, these extra lanes could also be used in the future
as space for bus rapid transit or commuter rail lines.

Also included in the final designs is a bicycle and walking path that will feature six individually-designed resting/viewing platforms.

Very stark comparison between the old and new bridges. It looks like they doubled the capacity with far fewer components compared to the old truss.

IDK if I like the name. It will always be the Tappan Zee Bridge.

Just like the Sears tower's real name has "Sears" in it. Not that lame "Willis" nonsense masquerading as a real name.

The true fans will always call it by its colloquial name.

Perhaps. But unlike the other bridge & tunnel renamings in NY, this is actually a different bridge. At least with the Sears/Willis Tower, it's the same building.

The Tappan Zee will come down. It would have been nice to keep the old name.
