Hamilton's industrial skyline has been undergoing change. There is more to come in the not-too-distant future, but a part of it was demolished this morning.

I heard the boom, had thoughts of some disastrous explosion befalling the city, like a rail tanker car exploding in a yard about a km west of our house, but this must have been what my ears recorded.

Last Stelco blast furnace demolished on Hamilton bayfront
The towering structure was felled by a controlled explosion just after 9 a.m.

Goodbye Big “E” — it was a blast.

The last Stelco blast furnace in Hamilton was demolished Wednesday using a controlled explosion that cut out the supports under the towering steelmaking relic that dominated the western bayfront skyline for more than half a century.

A massive boom that echoed around the harbour was followed by a slow collapse of the roughly 200-foot-tall “E” blast furnace built in 1968 on Pier 16.

...

I included still photos from the news story in this post in the Hamilton sub.

Québec and especially Lévis, which is in the shadow of her neighbour, but has a lot to give to those who love little urban walks.

Metrotown

It's not everyday that someone does a walking tour video of the suburb of Metrotown:

Video of Trois-Rivières, starring the «Amphithéâtre COGECO», where once a paper mill used to be. Nice views.

The city of Saguenay is formed by the merger of three urban poles, La Baie, Jonquière, and Chicoutimi (plus some villages around). Here is a video of Chicoutimi, on the Saguenay river.

And a video of Jonquière area

Not the best quality of video, but a different view of a city: what a crew sees from a ship on the «Saint-Laurent» river.. Quebec city and its bridges.

Hamilton has a "very specific funkiness," as someone once said. It's a bit hard-edged, a bit forlorn, a bit underwhelming and a bit ragged, but also unpretentious and direct in a way that Canadians aren't normally accustomed to.

You can sink your teeth into it. You can move there, dive in to the local culture, and find a niche for yourself in a way that's easier to do than in bigger cities.

I miss the place sometimes.

Thank you for posting this! I had saved a link to this video, probably a couple of years ago, but never watched in its entirety. I have now. And I learned a few things I did not know, about a town where I was born and raised, and have lived in or near most of my adult life.

Things have changed a bit in the two+ years since this was produced. But it hits the nail squarely on the head in terms of how it covers the "renewal" of the older lower city.

There's still so much division across the municipality. While the outer suburban and rural wards of the amalgamated city are mentioned briefly, the people who live there have so much angst (on average) about how "their tax dollars are being spent to fix up a downtown they don't use or benefit from"... I get that sentiment, but their math is all wrong.

It's been a city in transition for 30 years. That continues today, but it's on a much better foundation now. Largely due to many of the stories told in that video.

Kaohsiung's always been like a second home to me.

Here's a video of Kaohsiung's wonderfully weird Kaohsiung Music Center.
