‘Girlie Freakshow’ Coming To Coney Island This Summer

03-23-2010
By Jess Goodwin

Quote:
The ladies of the Coney Island Circus Sideshow do not mess around. Beautiful, dangerous and daring, they eat fire, swallow swords, hammer things into their heads, contort their bodies into unimaginable shapes — all for their audiences’ delight and pleasure. They are, in a word, badass.

And they’ll be featured in their very own show — the Girlie Freakshow — this season at Coney Island. Mistress of Ceremonies will be Insectavora (aka Angelica).

“I’m excited and honored that [Mayor of Coney Island] Dick Zigun has me as the Mistress of Ceremonies heading the Coney Island Girlie Freakshow, and I’m really happy to be back home this year with all the fun and exciting amusements coming to Coney from Zamperla and the folks from Victorian Gardens,” says Insectavora. She now climbs ladders of swords, walks on glass, and more than likely, intimidates most everyone she comes across. She boasts an impressive fire act, including fire-eating, -breathing, and -twirling, as well as “X-rated fire from below.”

Joining her will be Serpentina (aka Stephanie Torres, Miss Coney Island 2007-8) and Remy Vicious. Kryssy Kocktail, currently expecting her third child, will be performing as much as she can, alongside a number of other guests.

“Seeing as I’m a high risk pregnancy it doesn’t really leave me a lot of options,” says Kocktail. “I guess this really isn’t the safest line of work to be in if you’re supposed to be housing another being, but permitting all goes well, I’d like to try and do a couple [shows].”

Kryssy Kocktail may be one of the Sideshow’s most well-rounded ladies. She has electric chair and bed of nails acts, not to mention fire eating, glass walking, balloon sculpting, human blockhead and blade box acts. She also, according to the show’s web site, “plays accordion poorly and tends bar.”

“I bartended for 15 years,” she admits, “and the men that I meet in bars are definitely bigger jerks than anybody I’ve ever met doing a ‘family-oriented’ show.”

Before joining the Sideshow, Kocktail worked at Coney Island for two summers doing odd jobs. She took classes with the Sideshow school, and soon Mayor Zigun brought her on as the bladebox girl.

“[My kids] love it,” says Kocktail. “Where else can they hang out with a man [Donny Vomit] who thinks boogers are fun, and have Auntie Stephantina (Serpentina) let them pet her snake?”

Serpentina, whose 6-foot stature has earned her the nickname Glamazon, has been working the Sideshow for over a decade now. She, along with Remy Vicious, will be snake-charming. She can also light torches with her tongue and fingertips.

The Circus Sideshow, at the corner of Surf Avenue and West 12th Street, will perform on Saturdays and Sundays, while the Girlie Freakshow will perform during the week, Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturday evenings at 10 and 11 p.m., starting April 3 until the last weekend in September. For more information visit www.coneyisland.com/sideshow.shtml.

Ballet company, philharmonic targeted for proposed Coney amphitheater

March 25, 2010
By RICH CALDER

Quote:
Marty Markowitz wants to add a little panache to his planned Coney Island amphitheater.

The borough president’s $64 million pet project is already slated to host his summertime concert series, but now the Parks Department is looking for a top philharmonic, ballet group or other performance troupe to occupy the venue at Asser Levy Park during the rest of the warm-weather days and nights.

The Department today began soliciting proposals from parties interested in offering programming beyond the beep’s concert series and maintaining the amphitheater.

The 8,000-seat project, which is still awaiting city Design Commission approval, has yet to break ground and isn’t expected to be operating until at least 2012.

Markowitz said "the possibilities are endless" for the planned open-air amphitheater, adding he imagines it becoming "a wonderful home for a summer residency for a philharmonic or a ballet company."

While a majority of Coney Island boardwalk business owners support the amphitheater, many Brighton Beach residents who reside in adjacent high-rises vehemently oppose it. They claim it is too large, would reduce parkland, and the noise blasting from concerts would overwhelm both residents and the worshipers of two nearby synagogues.

Geoffrey Croft of the nonprofit New York City Park Advocates questioned why the city is seeking proposals when it has not yet even approved the plan. He and other opponents have been pushing for the plan to be decided through the city’s extensive Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP).

The request for proposals released today offered some juicy tidbits about the project, such as:

* The stage would be 90 feet wide, 50 feet deep and 55 feet high.

* The back area will include a 4,075-square-foot VIP terrace, a 1,315-square-foot green room, a 990-square-foot storage area, a 835-square-foot multipurpose room, security offices, dressing rooms, bathrooms, and office space.

* The venue will include infrastructure for food concessions, including 10 locations for food carts, three for food service, and a commissary with room for a beverage truck and food storage containers.

* The Parks Department wants to continue to keep shows at the site free.

The project would replace a 66,000-square-foot band shell already used for Markowitz’s summer concert series with a modern 87,200-square foot open-air amphitheater.

It would be topped by 60,000-square roof that Markowitz’s staff has said is shaped like a "hyperbolic paraboloid," but in layman’s terms looks more like a massive potato chip made of steel and fiberglass and flooded with hundreds of stage lights.

The amphitheater would include a stage house, a paved area with seating for 5,000 persons and lawns that would accommodate an extra 3,000 seats.

Designers initially considered a retractable roof when Markowitz first pitched his pet project in 2006 but opted to go with a permanent canopy to save money.
Markowitz last year raised the possibility of adding it back, but the RFP does not mention the addition of a retractable roof.

The project also calls for building a new playground and bathrooms at Asser Levy and other upgrades.

Markowitz is using $54 million of his office’s capital improvement funds for the project, while the mayor’s office is kicking in $10 million.

The borough president said he envisions park becoming "a welcoming eastern gateway to a revitalized Coney Island" and a place that tourists and residents can relax and enjoy recreation and the "vibrant cultural programming that has been the park’s hallmark since at least the turn of the 20th Century."

Riders wait for six hours on Opening Day to get a ride on Coney Island's Cyclone coaster

By Simone Weichselbaum and Erin Durkin
March 29th 2010

Quote:
Coney Island's Cyclone sped back into action Sunday - and brothers Joseph and David Zubin camped out starting at 5 a.m. to make sure they'd get the first ride.

"I feel great. The Cyclone - when you hit the first drop, your body drops out," Joseph Zubin, 21, of Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, said as he climbed off the coaster after a six-hour wait. "I can't even catch my breath right now. ...It was worth the wait."

It was the third year the brothers showed up early in hopes of getting the first ride on the iconic coaster. This year they finally beat out Erik Knapp, 44, of Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn, who took the No. 1 spot for the past four years.

"This year, I was like, 'Let them have it.' They are hungry for it," said Knapp. "Being beat feels great. I want somebody else to enjoy Coney Island."

Sunday was Opening Day for the Cyclone - where the first 100 people rode free - the Wonder Wheel and dozens of other Coney rides. This summer's newest attraction, Luna Park, with 19 rides from Italian amusement giant Zamperla, is expected to open Memorial Day weekend.

Borough President Marty Markowitz broke an egg cream bottle over the first car to celebrate the opening, but refused to get on himself. "I don't get on the ride ever. Ever. Ever," he said. "I am scared. My ride is Wonder Wheel."

Luna Park Mystery Picture

Monday, March 29, 2010

Quote:
Last week the picture below surfaced online showing 8 pipes that had been placed under ground at the new Luna Park site. Since then the picture has appeared on various message boards with folks wondering what purpose the pipes will serve.

The 8 pipes are actually part of a detention tank which is being installed underground to collect stormwater runoff. The purpose of the detention tank is to absorb surplus stormwater, to prevent it from overloading the local infrastructure. Basically, instead of stormwater overflowing and causing flooding, the detention tank will instead hold the stormwater and slowly release it preventing a surge and the potential for property damage.

That way Luna Park will be able to quickly recover after storms, and immediately begin operations for you enjoyment. However, since we've already made weather arrangements calling for clear skies and nothing but sunshine, none of this should really have to come into play, it's merely just a back-up plan. =)

New tickets to ride in Coney Island

By Joe Maniscalco
April 6, 2010

Quote:
They’re calling it Luna Park, but the new amusement park set to open in Coney Island next month will not be charging “Nickel Empire” prices.

Central Amusement International — operators of the new park on Surf Avenue — will offer thrill seekers two different price plans, with prices going up on weekends.

The first plan will allow patrons to “pay as they go” with the purchase of $1 credits. Each of Luna Park’s 19 new rides will be worth anywhere between 3 and 7 credits.

The park will also offer wristbands allowing them to ride as many rides as they like, as often as they like, within a four-hour time period.

Weekday wristbands will sell for $26, while weekend wristbands will cost $30.

Astroland, which preceded Luna Park on the Coney Island seashore, charged $5 for its adult rides and $2.50 for the kiddie rides before it closed down in 2008,

Customers could also purchase pay-one-price wrist bands for $23.99 during select times that also included three rides on the Cyclone roller coaster. Luna Park tickets will not include a ride on the Cyclone, which now costs $8 for the first ride, and $5 for each ride immediately thereafter.

The first of Coney Island’s newest rides are expected to arrive from Italy in a few days.

Construction at the park, meanwhile, continued this week in advance of opening day on May 29. A new drainage system designed to help keep Luna Park high & dry during foul weather has already been installed.

Last week, parking along one side of West 10th Street adjacent to Luna Park was temporarily suspended to accommodate construction.

Luna Park officials say that parking will be restored once construction is complete.

Hazy view of the construction site...

"Parcel A" is the block where the new (and temporary) Luna Park will open, the other two sites remaining for Scream Zone, set to open next year.

Underwhelming? We really don't have much to go on other than the city's generalized idea of what the redevelopment would look like fully implemented.
But compared to the Coney Island of today? I'm very excited about what's planned.

I like that building, though I've never been in it. It will be restored along with the rest of the boardwalk if things go as planned. They had a temporary roller rink open a year or two ago.

yes underwhelming. not that any of this is going happen any time soon, but lets just hope all of that ridiculous amount of bland buildings are placeholders.

its too bad, coney should have been allowed to morph itself organically over time instead of clearing the deck for this soviet planning crapshoot.

LOL...

It's ridiculous statements like this that answers the question as to why Coney Island is in the shape it is today. Good for a laugh I didn't expect.

Luna park to test limits of rides — on Brooklynites

By Joe Maniscalco
April 15, 2010

Quote:
The Italian ride manufacturers behind Coney Island’s newest amusement park say they will try out their latest scream machines right here in Brooklyn, making local thrill seekers either test pilots or guinea pigs.

“We’re basically putting everything at the limits of what you can do with a regular human body,” Central Amusement International President & CEO Valerio Ferrari said this week. “Our goal is to bring prototypes to the market at our own park first to make sure everything is working fine.”

Ferrari describes one of the new rides — Air Race — as a “corkscrewing” aerial simulator capable of subjecting its riders to up to four gs.

“It’s going to be quite the ride,” Ferrari said.

According to Ferrari, some of Zamperla’s newest rides are actually based on concepts pioneered in Coney Island 100 years ago.

“For us it’s like coming full circle,” he said. “The manufacturers are back to where they belong in Coney island.”

Next year, four more Zamperla thrill rides are expected to debut in a new section of the Coney Island amusement district called the “Scream Zone.”

The company, an offshoot of Italian ride manufacturer Zamperla, has a 10-year lease with the city to operate the amusement park on Surf Avenue in Coney Island. They plan to introduce at least one new ride in Brooklyn every year over the next decade.

Central Amusements already operates Victorian Gardens, a venue in Manhattan which features kiddie rides — where g force is usually not a factor.

Smile! And you can work at Luna Park!

By Joe Maniscalco
April 16, 2010

Quote:
The man running Coney Island’s newest amusement park has some advice for all those hoping to land a job at the People’s Playground this summer: smile. No, really smile.

“We are selling a service, a moment,” said Central Amusement International CEO and President Valerio Ferrari. “We need someone who can really transmit that environment to our guests.”

The first of three Luna Park job screening events took place at MCU Park on Surf Avenue this week, giving job hunters a chance to impress local stakeholder groups who will refer qualified applicants for interviews in May.

Two other events are slated for April 17 at the New York Aquarium from 10 am to 2 pm and the Carey Gardens Community Center on April 22 from 2 pm to 8 pm.

“This is a good opportunity for young people like me to come out and get a job,” said Coney Island resident Austin Redd, 18. “I think it’s going to work out for me.”

Risk Your Life For The Good Of Mankind ('s amusment)

Ah, Coney island. Used to be you only had to worry about junkies, carnies and the older, wooden rides maiming you. Now the guys behind Coney Island's newest amusement park are going to kill you with some space age, futuristic, previously unreleased technology.

That's right. If you venture onto the new rides built by Central Amusement International, you've pretty much agreed to put your life into their hands for the sake of roller coaster enthusiasts everywhere. “We’re basically putting everything at the limits of what you can do with a regular human body,” President & CEO Valerio Ferrari told The Brooklyn Paper. He later added, “Our goal is to bring prototypes to the market at our own park first to make sure everything is working fine.”

If you read between the lines, he's basically saying, "Hey, we don't know if this shit works at all but if it does, it's going to be awesome! If not, you might die a horrible flaming whirlwind death! But it's Coney Island, right, who gives a f**k!"

Amphitheater critics give concert promoters an earful

By Joe Maniscalco
April 20, 2010

Quote:
The few concert promoters who actually showed up for last Friday’s public walking tour of Asser Levy Seaside Park heard a lot from the Parks Department about how great Borough President Markowitz’s plan to build a new $64-million amphitheater inside the park is going to be — but it wasn’t all music to everyone’s ears.

Critics who view the amphitheater as nothing more than a commercial land grab of public space lambasted the project for more than an hour, frustrating Parks officials and making it hard for them to make their sales pitch.

The agency is eager to land a potential promoter as soon as possible because it can not complete a required Environmental Assessment of the proposed 8,000-seat amphitheater without the operator’s input.

Tempers immediately started to flare during a short pre-tour presentation held inside the New York Aquarium’s Education Hall.

Amphitheater critics insisted that the community is already suffering because of Markowitz’s annual Seaside Summer Concert Series, and, said opponent Arlene Brenner, the area simply “can’t stand” an influx of more concert-goers.

The animosity later boiled over during the tour of the park, located on Surf Avenue between Ocean Parkway and West Fifth Street, when Sam Kimball, a representative for Marquee Concerts turned on Brenner.

“All we’ve heard for an hour is you,” cried Kimball, whose company specializes in music and comedy shows. “Enough.”

Marquee Concerts was actually one of just three concert promoters that took Friday’s walking tour, according to the Parks Department, and Kimball later said that he wasn’t sure his company is “even interested” in the amphitheater.

The other two promoters on hand were Metropolitan Talent Presents and Live Nation.

If built, the new amphitheater — officially known as the “Coney Center” — would eat up virtually all of Asser Levy Park’s open recreational space. Critics also maintain that expanded concert programming would unlawfully interfere with services held at two synagogues directly across from Asser Levy Seaside Park.

But Betsy Smith, a Parks Department assistant commissioner said that the noise concern is unwarranted.

“We are not going to permit amplified sound when it’s against the law,” she said.

Coney's concrete walk taking too long to build

Not only is the city installing controversial concrete slabs on Coney Island’s boardwalk, it’s taking too long to do it.

The sections where work is being done — in Brighton Beach between Ocean Parkway and Brighton First Road and in front of the amusement rides from West 10th Street to Stillwell Avenue — are encased by chain-link fences and have been narrowed to half their size.

“If we have the crowds that we are anticipating, this will definitely be a problem,” said Todd Dobrin, chair of the Coney Island Friends of the Boardwalk. “There are only so many people you can fit between the fence and the railing, especially near the amusement area. That place will be a hazard.”

Cold weather stalled the project, according to Parks Department spokesman Phil Abramson.

“We try to do as much work as we can during the winter months but are restricted by severe weather conditions, especially as this project is right by the waterfront,” he said.

Although signs are posted on the boardwalk indicating that the work won’t be completed until the fall, Abramson told this paper that the bulk of the project will be completed in time for Coney Island’s busy summer season. The section by the amusements should open by Memorial Day weekend but the Brighton Beach portion may take longer, he said.

“We’re working to expedite its completion and hope to also have it done by Memorial Day weekend, but it should be done no later than mid-summer at worst,” he said.

Parks staffers better get a move on it, said Community Board 13 Chair Marion Cleaver.

“I understand that it was not a great winter so I’m sure they had trouble scheduling the work, but I’m kind of upset about this,” she said. “It’s ironic that the mayor is pushing the new Coney Island and how great it’s going to be and yet we have to deal with the work not being done on the boardwalk in a timely fashion.”
