I see that there is a nice new welcome sign for Riverview at the foot of the new Gunningsville Bridge. Steel construction with a base of stones recovered from the original Gunningsville Bridge.

Sapporo Sushi is opening in that little mini mall across from Canadian Tire containing Little Caesar's Pizza and Goji's Frozen Yogurt.

And the sushi wars continue........

That is a first for Riverview though, so its not so much part of the Sushi wars, I have good friends who live in the neighborhoods around there and they are excited that they can actually walk for sushi now instead of drive.

Some info regarding the proposed Wellness Centre to be built in the Mill Creek Nature park area:

- Cost - $45M
- likely won't be built for 7-10 years
- Components will include a single ice rink (with room for a second to be added later), a double gymnasium, multipurpose space with temporary staging, indoor walking/running track, climbing wall, meeting/banquet space, a kitchen and an aquatic facility including a total of three pools (one of which would be a leisure pool).
- The facility will be 97,000 sq ft (with an additional 29,000 sq ft if a second rink is added).
- Expectation is $10M from other levels of government, but even with saving up $2.5M over the next 10 years prior to construction, the remaining cost of $32.5M would mean an annual average property tax increase of $303.

I could see this becoming a potentially unpopular venture for the town. It's times like this that the lack of a significant commercial/industrial tax base in the town really hurts. The wellness centre will have to be funded primarily out of residential taxes...........

From the agenda for the April 2015 Riverview PAC meeting:

A request for rezoning of a portion of the Mill Creek lands to allow for the Town of Riverview to construct their new public works garage and operations centre. If I recall, I believe this new building is in the order of $12-15M or so.

So, in the first five months of 2015, there has been a grand total of one PAC meeting, and this single meeting dealt with only one substantive issue - the rezoning of land for the new civic operations centre and public garage. There have been no rezoning requests for private projects.

Things are really booming on the other side of the river........

Perhaps the town planning used intelligent zoning decisions so they don't have to be changed frequently?

The Findlay strip mall being constructed now in the current cold weather is in a suburban commercial zone already so no need to rezone for that.

Perhaps, and no disrespect to Riverview, but in previous years, PACS agendas in all three communities in the metro area were decidedly more busy than they seem to be this year. I guess I was just using Riverview as a proxy to describe the general malaise in the construction industry affecting greater Moncton this year.

Posted on Thursday, May 21, 2015
91.9, The Bend

A ceremonial groundbreaking was held at Riverview High School today to mark a new addition.

The funding will also be used to renovate existing technology in classrooms and upgrades to the school's sprinkler system.

Social Development Minister Cathy Rogers attended the groundbreaking today on behalf of Education Minister Serge Rousselle.

Future of Riverview Farmers Market in question
Town looks for manager to take over the weekly summer event
By David Bartlett, CBC News Posted: May 29, 2015 8:25 AM AT
Last Updated: May 29, 2015 8:25 AM AT

The Town of Riverview is looking for someone to take over its weekly summer farmers market.

The town has lost more than $17,000 on the market over the last four years, said Shane Thomson, the town's director of economic development.

Recently, the town council voted to step away from operating the market, but it's hoping that a vendor, community group or private company will take over running it.

Thomson said a request for proposals has gone out, with a deadline of June 5.

Anyone have any news about Bridgedale Blvd, and if they just gave up on it, and the 500 Acre park that's supposed to resemble a double sized Centennial Park, or any of the commercial/residential in that area it seems like a slow process since last time anything was said was 2010-2011 If I remember correctly...

This is a 10 to 20 year project.

Shane Thompson, Riverview's director of economic development said: "But, just as in Moncton, developers are waiting on the big events centre announcement....

“There’s significant land available – over 200 acres of commercial land on top of Gunningsville Boulevard, and easy walking distance to Moncton’s downtown....including that there is now a road to access said land, and essential services have been extended to the area.“We expect an announcement could trigger some movement there.”

How can a 3-4 Kilometer road take that long to build? That makes no sense.

If you mean the entire project meaning the housing, commercial, and park/green space they had planned for that area then it makes more sense.

From what was said it sounded like there would be more then 200 acres but that is understandable they probably don't want to develop all at once if they develop that land at all, and in what world is he living that it's an easy walk to downtown? It's between 20-60 Minutes walk depending on what area of downtown you go to. It was probably said in passing but someone had said Bridgedale could be extended into Dieppe, and a new bridge would be put in place extending the Melanson /Amirault Road intersection into a 4 way but that might have been said by someone as a wishful thinking situation.

I see Corey Craig Developments has erected a sign near the southwest corner of Gunningsville and Coverdale. Another Tim's on the way?
