San Antonio downtown pizzeria Playland to close at the end of June

https://www.mysanantonio.com/food/ar...-Editors-Picks

One of San Antonio's most beloved pizzerias will be closed for good by the end of next month. Chef Stefan Bowers took to Instagram over the weekend to announce that Playland's last day of service will be on June 30.

"To the staff, I love you," wrote Bowers. "To our guests and restaurant family, my gratitude can’t be put in to words. I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did."

Bowers went on to explain that the closure was prompted when he was presented with an opportunity to move out of the real estate at 400 E Houston Street. From the ashes of Playland, Bowers teased a new restaurant and market concept amidst the lofts at 1221 Broadway this fall. The new joint will not serve pizza and will operate under a yet to be announced name.

Big Red–Infused Tortillas Aren’t Gimmicks. They’re Revelations.

Leo Davila’s combos are twists on the classics of his multicultural San Antonio upbringing, and they make Stixs & Stone worth the hype.

They're probably good. Big Red itself though... I always thought of it as liquid cotton candy.

The New England version of Big Red is Moxie. But it tastes like black licorice instead of red.

Sounds like fun to me. Moxie. Excuse me, but Bid Red soda pop tastes almost exactly like an otherwise Creme Soda.

San Antonio's new all-you-can-eat sushi spot Umiya is now open

https://www.mysanantonio.com/food/ar...P-CP-Spotlight

Umiya, the new all-you-can-eat sushi spot, is now open in San Antonio. The Corpus Christi-based concept is now housed in the former spot of Drew Brees' Walk-On's Sports Bistreaux.

The highway-facing restaurant at 11075 Interstate 10 West takes over the space that once housed the sports bar, which closed in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Another Walk-On's location remains at 1400 Pantheon Way in Stone Oak.

An employee at Umiya tells MySA the restaurant is now open daily. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. most days, except Fridays and Saturdays when Umiya closes at 10:30 p.m. The restaurant was not immediately available to return requests for comment.

San Antonio’s Cullum’s Attaboy to hold grand opening, begin serving dinner

Cullum’s Attaboy quietly began serving breakfast and brunch this spring. Its foray into dinner service will occur this Friday.

https://www.sacurrent.com/food-drink...inner-29020909

Fans of chef Chris Cullum’s fare will soon be able to snag his bacon-laden Attaboy Burger along with fancier eats, including caviar, escargot and truffled eggs, in a casual space near his Cullem's Attagirl eatery by the North St. Mary's Strip.

Cullum’s Attaboy — a brick-and-mortar space named after his burger-focused food truck of the same moniker — quietly began serving breakfast and brunch this spring. Over the past weekend, however, the chef revealed that he's scheduled a Friday, June 3 grand opening for the space and its simultaneous launch of dinner service.

Attaboy Burger purists can still snag the sando at the new spot, located at 111 Kings Court. New to the menu, however, are other hearty dishes such as steak and eggs, French favorite white fish meunière and a caviar and roe program including sturgeon, beluga and rainbow trout products. Fish egg aficionados can even opt to have the delicacy accompanied by a “set up" featuring crema, chive and homemade blini.

Attaboy also will offer no-fuss cocktails such as an Aperol spritz, Ramos Gin Fizz and bloody mary as well as a small collection of digestifs such as Amontillado sherry and Pernod.

The Attaboy truck served burgers outside music venue Paper Tiger from 2016 to 2018, after which the chef’s focus turned to his Southern fare spot Attagirl, also nestled just off the Strip. Attagirl is also located on Kings Court between East Mistletoe St. and North St. Mary's.

After Friday's grand opening, Cullum’s Attaboy will be serve customers 9 a.m.-10 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Those looking to attend the grand opening should be aware the menu will be limited to burgers, potato donuts and cheesecake.

New tea and coffee bar R + R Collective Co. opening in Southtown this weekend

In addition to caffeinated sips, the new shop will offer vintage clothing, houseplants, wellness products and organic herbs in bulk.

https://www.sacurrent.com/food-drink...ekend-29020929

New Southtown coffee and tea bar R + R Collective Co. will open this Friday, targeting customers who like to sip while they shop.

In addition to caffeinated drinks, the store at 1010 S. Flores St. will offer vintage clothing, houseplants, wellness products and an apothecary of organic bulk herbs. Co-founders Tyler Beakley, Kelsey Minard, Ashlea Ma and Brian Valdez said the concept focuses on local products and exceptional service.

“Retail is changing, and we are excited to be a part of the change. We know customers want more intention put into what they are offered, and we are thrilled to provide not only more thoughtful products and local brands, but a more thoughtful experience for the customer overall," Beakley said in a release.

Beakley and Minard also operate SA-based wellness company Relyt, which offers self-care products and education rooted in Beakley’s study of herbalism and the phytochemistry. R +R co-founders Ma and Valdez helm Be Kind Rewind, a local vintage clothing business specializing in vintage menswear

The teams met while participating in local pop-up markets around SA with their own brands before embarking on R + R.

The coffee-meets-retail concept will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Fast-casual chain Hawaiian Bros Island Grill will open its first San Antonio store this summer

Hawaiian Bros offers island-style comfort food and plate lunches popular across the Aloha State.

https://www.sacurrent.com/food-drink...ummer-29029778

Fast-casual restaurant concept Hawaiian Bros Island Grill will say "aloha" to the San Antonio suburb of Live Oak this summer.

The Kansas City, Missouri-based chain will open its first Alamo City outlet at 7929 Pat Booker Road, inside a new 2,500-square-foot building on a plat that previously housed a Nicha's Comida Mexicana restaurant.

Hawaiian Bros offers island-style comfort food and plate lunches, a staple across the Aloha State. The plates typically consist of flavorful meats such as slow-roasted pulled pork served with traditional side dishes including rice and macaroni salad.

Hawaiian Bros' menu also includes teriyaki grilled chicken, slow-roasted Kalua pork and sweet-and-spicy grilled chicken. Its specialty sides include Spam musubi, in which the canned meat is glazed with teriyaki sauce and wrapped in seaweed with rice. Dole Soft Serve, a fruity, tropical spin on the frozen dessert, is also a signature of the chain.

New 'American tavern' Double Standard, now open in downtown San Antonio

A happy hour featuring $1 East Coast oysters, $2 draft beer and $3 well drinks runs noon to 6 p.m. daily.

https://www.sacurrent.com/food-drink...tonio-29046441

The new “American Tavern” concept from the group behind San Antonio foodie havens Hot Joy, Barbaro and Little Death is now serving from the ground floor of downtown's Rand Building.

Double Standard announced its opening Friday on social media.

While the details in the Instagram post are sparse beyond its hours, we do know the restaurant occupies the 3,000-square-foot space that formerly housed Rosella Coffee's downtown location, closed early in the pandemic. John Philpot handles the kitchen while Esquire Tavern alum Myles Worrell oversees the bar.

According to Double Standard's website, the menu encompasses burgers, steak frites, roasted chicken and fresh seafood such as fresh oysters and shrimp cocktail. A selection of bar snacks includes tinned seafood, crackers and Scotch eggs.

As for tipples, the spot offers craft cocktails, $6 well drinks and shot-and-a-beer combos from the bar. A happy hour featuring $1 East Coast oysters, $2 draft beer and $3 well drinks runs noon to 6 p.m. daily.

Double Standard is located at 114 E. Houston St.

24hr coffee and donut place opening on Houston St.

https://saheron.com/voodoo-doughnuts...n-san-antonio/

"Voodoo Doughnut, the iconic Portland, Oregon-based retail chain known for selling donuts with eclectic toppings in pink boxes, has signed a lease to open its first San Antonio store in the location of the Playland pizzeria on East Houston Street.

Like Voodoo’s other locations, the store will be open 24 hours a day, baking donuts three times a day so they’re offered fresh, he said. It will also sell coffee drinks, including espresso-based drinks, he said."

New Pearl restaurant Carriqui to open in old Liberty Bar building

https://www.expressnews.com/food/res...d-17224846.php

Skillets will soon sizzle and spirits once again flow in one of San Antonio’s most storied restaurant spaces. Carriqui is set to open this September in the former Pearl-area home of Liberty Bar.

The new restaurant is named in honor of the colorful green carriqui bird that can be spotted fluttering around South Texas. The menu will draw inspiration from the carriqui’s flight path through the state, with fresh Gulf Coast seafood dishes, Rio Grande Valley-inspired botana platters, San Antonio’s pit-cooked barbacoa and brisket and more.

Carriqui’s kitchen will be helmed Jaime Gonzalez, who previously served as executive chef at Hotel Emma’s Supper restaurant. Cassie McCloud, who created the famous Three Emmas cocktail at Hotel Emma’s Sternewirth, will lead Carriqui’s bar program.

New Lonja Square aims to be the Southside's multi-cultural night market

https://www.mysanantonio.com/food/re...-Editors-Picks

A disclaimer that would only make sense in a place like San Antonio greets social media wanderers who land on the just-launched Instagram page for Lonja Square: "Sorry we can only have one taco vendor!" It's not that owner-chef Alejandro Paredes doesn't like tacos, the ones he makes — actually, his entire menu — are so good they recently earned high marks from the New York Times.

He just wants his new idea, a weekend night market, to be a full, varied plate of San Antonio's food scene. That means Cubano sandwiches, Indian indulgences, sausages, and whatever else he can fit at his Southside spot. While Lonja Square aims to offer a bit of everything, alcohol is the exception.

Starting Friday, June 10, the patio area of his Carnitas and Fish Lonja business (Paredes has combined the two concepts under one roof) will transform into "Lonja Square." Paredes is in the process of installing seven vendor stalls on a lot at 1107 Roosevelt for a melting pot market.

"I'm trying to do something for the neighborhood," Paredes tells MySA. "We want it to be very local, very community-based."

He says vendors will be able to set up during the day, sell throughout the night, and then must be able to pack up and be mobile at the end of the evening. The format lends to pop-up-style businesses. Food market visitors will be able to use the patio benches and restrooms.

"It's going to be a kind of weekend warrior kind of thing," Paredes adds. "You know, like people that have regular jobs during the day and they have Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to sell their food. That's basically what we want to do."

Vendors are asked to make at least a three-day commitment to Lonja Square. If they want to sign on for the entire month, they can. Paredes says vendors will pay $200 to sell for three days. The best way to contact him is through Instagram or Facebook.

Food hall concepts are popping up throughout the city since Pearl's Bottling Department opened in 2017. There's now a Southside food hall at Tech Port Center and Arena as well as the upcoming Make Ready Market at River North.

Paredes says he's not trying to compete with any of that, he just wants to create something for the community south of Southtown. He says the night market will be different than what some diners grew accustomed to as San Antonio's food scene evolved.

"Sometimes you only want a sandwich or a couple of things and you end up spending $50 or $60," he says. "We want to make it very affordable, very easy. Where you come in, eat, and go, and there's not much more to it."

I visited the original in Portland close to a decade ago now and have been to the one in Austin a few times as well. I love Voodoo donuts and I'm very excited they are expanding into San Antonio! It will add more fun vibes to downtown.

Longtime San Antonio favorite Sazon Mexican Cafe moving to new, larger location

The new location, half a mile from the original, will feature a full bar and patio dining.

https://www.sacurrent.com/food-drink...ation-29085096

West San Antonio favorite Sazon Mexican Cafe will move into bigger, boozier digs this summer, according to a blog post by the restaurant's social media publicist.

The new location, at 9822 Potranco Road — half a mile from the original — will offer Sazon standbys including puffy tacos, enchiladas, menudo and breakfast tacos along with new menu items, according to the blog. Scheduled for a July opening, the larger location will feature patio dining and a full bar.

The restaurant's original location at 10015 Potranco Road opened in 2008, helmed by brothers Javier and Fernando Sanchez. Their flagship spot will close ahead of the new restaurant’s opening, but it's last day of operation hasn't been set.

Pet-friendly bar and music venue Hidden Grove opening this summer in San Antonio suburb of Scherzo

Nick Marquez, who also owns the nearby Old Main Ice House and Bar House, says he hopes to have his new venture open by July 4.

https://www.sacurrent.com/food-drink...hertz-29084683

Pet parents of San Antonio soon will have a new spot to bring their furry friends as they imbibe and take in tunes.

Bar and music venue Hidden Grove is scheduled for a summer opening in Schertz, the Express-News reports. Part sports bar and part backyard hangout, the site sits on a half-acre at 539 Main St. in the northeastern suburb.

The primarily outdoor spot will offer amenities such as an exterior live-music stage, a large tap wall and full bar, according to the daily. In addition, it's in close proximity to barbecue spot The Purple Pig, and a space is allocated for food trucks.

Metal roofs and a canopy of mature trees that inspired the bar’s name will provide shade, but patrons can also seek air-conditioned comfort in its limited indoor seating, according to the Express-News.

“The goal is to provide a very relaxed environment where people can grab a drink and enjoy each others’ company, but we’ll also have live entertainment, plenty of TVs and we’ll show the UFC fights,” owner Nick Marquez told the Express-News. “This is my first project built from the frame up, so it allowed a lot of flexibility for the construction of it. It’s going to be neat.”

Marquez also operates nearby drinkeries Old Main Ice House and Bar House. He told the daily he hopes to have his new venture open by July 4.

San Antonio mainstay La Tuna Icehouse celebrating 30th anniversary with Saturday bash

SA garage-rock band Los #3 Dinners and DJ Timo will perform sets, and the icehouse will commemorate the gathering with a panoramic photo.

https://www.sacurrent.com/food-drink...-bash-29092596

Over a 30-year history, the bottle-cap laden grounds of Southtown's La Tuna Icehouse and Grill have hosted countless First Friday gatherings, after-work happy hours and lost weekends.

To celebrate all those years of serving up beer, food, music and community, the business will throw a bash this Saturday celebrating its third decade in business. Festivities will run 6 p.m. to midnight.

Longtime SA garage-rock band Los #3 Dinners will play a live show, followed by a set from DJ Timo. A golden-hour panoramic photo also will commemorate the milestone. Fifth-generation photography firm Goldbeck — a San Antonio legacy business in its own right — will snap the pic at 7 p.m.

La Tuna Icehouse opened in 1992 as a much smaller operation serving Southtown residents and visitors, and its owners built on new additions piecemeal as the neighborhood grew. It's currently run by Michael Berrier and Suzanne Martinez, whose daughters — Philippa and Ruby Martinez-Berrier — have joined the operation.

La Tuna is located at 100 Probandt St.

El Chivito Tortas Ahogadas opens second location on San Antonio’s West Side

https://www.sacurrent.com/food-drink...-side-29100425

San Antonio’s nationally-lauded El Chivito Tortas Ahogadas is now slinging tacos and tortas from a second location, this one on Marbach Road, MySA reports.

Last year, Food and Wine Magazine praised the outfit’s carnitas-stuffed torta smothered in chile de arbol sauce, calling it one of the best sandwiches in Texas. Along with its namesake tortas, the new spot also serves up crunchy Guadalajara-style tacos, tacos de birria and a sampling of savory empanadas, according to its online menu.

The family-run eatery began in Guadalajara, Mexico, and debuted in SA with a truck on Crossroads Road about a decade ago, MySA reports. The second shop, located at 9055 Marbach Road, Suite 103, opened it doors on Friday.

San Antonio Mexican restaurant Rosario's eyes August opening for new Southtown location

In the meantime, the business said, its flagship location at 910 S. Alamo St. is still open for business.

https://www.sacurrent.com/food-drink...ation-29132885

After recent radio silence on the project, San Antonio Mexican food haven Rosario’s now says it's on track to bring its larger Southtown restaurant online as early as this summer.

In a Saturday Twitter update, Rosario's said its new location at 722 S. St. Mary’s St. is expected to open in late August. In the meantime, the tweet points out, the flagship location at 910 S. Alamo St. — which the expanded restaurant will replace — is still serving.
Rosario's Southtown location is still OPEN.

Our new location down the street is expected to open late august. We will keep you updated through social media. In the mean time the Southtown location is still open for business. pic.twitter.com/gchkTRAi9g
— Rosarios (@rosariossa) June 11, 2022
In 2020, restaurateur Lisa Wong announced plans to demolish most of the old El Mirador building on South St. Mary’s to build a 14,000-square-foot, two-story building to house the Southtown Mexican food staple, which she's owned for 28 years.

The new structure will include a dining room, lounge, rooftop bar and exterior elevator tower along with outdoor dining and seating areas. In 2021, Wong duked it out with Peter Selig, owner of neighboring eatery Maverick Texas Brasserie, over her proposed building’s proximity to Maverick’s patio.

Wong’s design included a 20-foot wall built six inches from Maverick's patio space, which Selig said would block airflow and natural light, rendering his patio unusable.

However, in March of last year, Wong won final approval from the Historic and Design Review Commission to move forward with building the new Rosario's in Southtown
