sort of speaking of block 9, these shots of Mission Rock and the west side of Third were taken from over that way earlier this week, since I had some rare time to kill when the sun was shining from the east

they're still putting the finishing touches on block 3E

These shots are great. Too bad there's still so much parking lot left even after all this time.

these are from Tuesday...

block 6W

how some of the new buildings' shapes and massings occupy the view and feel as one walks around, subtlely...

and more outright

skin pretty much all on the Vision Neurosciences building

so here is Three Corners

nice little corner plaza going in for this one

bayfront park by Chase Center

Crane Cove Park was seeing some first touches of greenery

you can start to see the zigzag of the walkway in the mid-block passage next to 950 Tennessee

three examples of the New Dogpatch, at 19th and Tennessee

2177 Third has its living wall installed, still looking good

north down Third St from 19th

UCSF Psychiatry Center, Third St side

it steps down on the Tennessee side

Tennessee and Mariposa

north down Third from Mariposa

the treatment on the parking garage does do its thing sometimes

block 1 hotel and Mission Rock

hotel (so nice that it blocks block 1 as much as it does)

Mission Rock piles

this view of the creekwork doesn't look too different than previous...

.. but here we go, something to see

that's where I've been since I took these! I have to say, I saw a LOT of people out and about on my walk that day, but generally keeping distance. traffic way down, of course. I don't think any construction site was active when I walked by.

I had actually hoped to get more toward Market tomorrow, but looks like that may not be in the cards

hope everyone is staying safe and healthy

I had sort of assumed the pics from the last couple weeks would have to tide us over for the next month or so at least, since I figured there would be little activity going on (and hadn't observed any while taking them). so I was surprised to see little signs of progress in various places on a local walkabout yesterday.

did notice this today, tho

this is the CCA housing in Showplace Square

here showing how it relates to its parent building

88 Arkansas St in Potrero Flats

Mason on Mariposa really looks good to me. looking into the mid-block passage from Mariposa

looking through that blue plastic out toward the 18th St side

looking west towards Carolina from the mid-block passage

Carolina St

jumping over to Crane Cove Park, it looked to me that some work had been done there since the last set of pics. the light was tough

the northern-most block of Illinois has finally been fully paved, so another bit of normalcy coming to the area

looking south

another peek at the little plaza on the SE corner of 16th and Third

it is matched by one on the south side of the (Vision Neurosciences) building, which I think longer-term will form a mid-block passage between two buildings, but for now just will transition to the temporary parking lot.

the Psychiatry Center looked about the same as last time

the work along the Creek was starting to look more orderly

An interesting development, but a total snooze fest. Goes to show what pure, clean and beautiful sterile design gets you, total boredom.

I think that can be said regarding Mission Bay in general.
It would not feel like living in San Francisco for me, nor do I find any of the places appealing, including in Dogpatch.

Even though I'm glad the development is going on on this side of town, I think it's missed it's potential in some regards. I believe it's density should probably be at least around twice the planned.

Mission Rock looks to have an interesting and denser design, so there is hope for future projects further south in Dogpatch, Bayside and Hunter's Point.

Like Viewguysf said, it doesn't really look or feel like San Francisco, but it serves an important purpose of bringing more units to the city, and expanding development along the subtilized bay. Imagine the whole bay side of SF with built form like this (or denser), it would be quite a game changer even if somewhat boring.

I'm sure plenty of people would've loved to see this all denser (and taller) but this is what you get when you build a high volume of BMR housing on old marshland and soft infill. Limited heights, smaller budgets, and less daring architecture.

The Mission Rock stuff you're seeing is a profit-focused development with a larger commercial / office component, so of course, it's denser, taller, and nicer looking.

As for whether it looks like SF, I think that's kind of based more on the decade than any specific aesthetic golden rule.

I fixed your post. Mission Bay is squat because John Burton, under pressure from the Potrero Hill residents, dictated it so.

What gives historical San Francisco its feel is the standard 25 foot lot width. In Mission Bay, most of of the buildings cover an entire block. More or less height isn't the problem.

The three posts following mine above all bring up interesting and valid points!

In terms of the landfill that most of the east side of SF has, this is obviously a limiting factor to an extent. Because of earthquakes, obviously, the price to build (to code) is like a billion times higher if the building were to reach to x height. But even so, I think it's probably worth it in the long run considering the Bay Area's trajectory.

In terms of the 25 foot lot width- what would the answer to this aesthetic question be? Have different façades every 25 feet? I'm not opposed to it, but I think in modern day this would likely go wrong fast rather than mimic anything good that happened a couple centuries ago.

Overall, the aesthetic of this area of town is definitely off from the standard SF feel, but who knows, is 40 years this could be considered something that makes SF a diverse, cosmopolitan city.

The bottom line is that more units are a plus and any development on this side of town is a good thing, especially since the west side is unlikely to ever see anything like this in our lifetimes.
