^ I can't help but hope that some of those 19th century buildings on the left stay, but I'm guessing that at some point they'll be gone.

I think someone has said they are landmarked. Thank. God.

A couple pics from this evening. Apologies for the glare.

It's a shame that Chicago's 19th century building stock tends to be quite small. It's harder to adaptively re-use than in European cities where you've got 6-8 story buildings with massive footprints.

They could always knock through the walls on the inside and add a couple floors (if the foundations are strong enough), I suppose.

I'm more wondering if and when that standalone parking garage goes.

Also, looking at that photo above, a Chicago fantasy that will never happen: what if deliveries and removals could actually all be moved underground, and the alleys could be used as pedestrianized streets with cafes and things?

^The whole 1/4 block of old stock is indeed Landmarked, thank God. Oldest in the loop and one of my favorite blocks in the city.

Thanks, as always, for the great photos, James Mac!

The Loop's SSA has been staging parties in downtown alley ways for the past couple summers, which is a start: http://loopchicago.com/activate

they tried that, there still are train tunnels everywhere under the city, but it ended up being too costly to build and maintain.

The tunnels were even flooded when construction workers accidentally drove a piling into a tunnel under the river, which caused the Great Chicago Loop Flood of 1992. city officials almost added another star to the Chicago flag because of the event.

Now that i think about it weren't there photos posted here about a Chicago star on a piling in the river, and people were wondering what it was for? maybe it was because of the flood?

Really happy those building are landmarked. It's these clusters that break up the coarse grain monotony of modern downtowns.

Great pics! That core is ready for lift off. This will be a fun one to watch rise. There are so many good angles to capture the action from.
