The upper visible impact may be the 1 redeeming factor...this building (in my humble opinion) is very interesting at the top. Looking forward to seeing it...especially lit up at night.

Looks like a very difficult project. Tight site with large equipment and long casing. Heard this site was also littered with old driven piles that had to be extracted prior to caissons. Im sure this is a fun one for Case. Best of luck to those guys always seems like they do great work.

4/15
Piling extractor (vibrator with a clamp)

Old Pilings (the heavy wet clay preserves them very well).

Awesome pics harryc, solarwind. Thanks for keeping us updated.

I'm pretty excited for this one. I understand that some people here are not a fan of Stern nor the pomo precast design, but I think it will go well with all the glass boxes in Streeterville. The height is also awesome; the tower will look like its soaring from the park below.

Illinois and Grand are heavily trafficked by tourists and out of towners, as it connects Navy Pier with Michigan Ave. Having this lot bite the dust is a real cosmetic improvement on the cityscape down there.

20' bells on this project.

I don't think they're going down to rock for this tower.

^ interesting.

I'm curious, does anyone know what is currently the tallest building in chicago without rock caissons?

340 on the park is the tallest all hardpan tower in the city. If this were all hardpan that would be totally unprecedented beating 340 by like 200'. My understanding was that this will have a few rock socketed cassions and the rest big ass hard pan belled cassions. Im not sure it's physically possible to put something this tall and skinny on anything but bedrock.

thanks for the info.

it seemed weird to me that they wouldn't be going down to rock for an 850' tower.

do any of our construction spies have more insider info on this?

One Bennett Park got its full building permit yesterday. Hopefully we can see this thing start to rise now more than just its foundation.

Word from a CASE worker is that there will be no rock caissons on this one - and that CASE will be packing up this week.

There hasn't been any rock equipment over there. No compressors or toothed bits so...

Not rock socketed - also looks like there will be no basement in the skyscraper next to the underground garage - that's just wrong.

The rebar poking up out of the caisson sleeve shows where the top of the foundation mat will be.

Very Big belling bit ( the wings fold in while it is lowered 50-80' down the shaft, then pulled open by a cable, distributing the load over a much larger area.

They're opening a sales office on Hubbard. Prices are starting at $1.8M for a 2 bed 1,737 sqft unit.
