Seen the wrecker. This about 1/5 of the huge contiguous parcel that contains the strip mall and new tower. Hard to tell how much of the activity was just staging for the other projects but it has the feel of imminent construction.

Sorry the new shiny strip mall ( with parking behind the strip not along Odgen ) is not very photogenic - but it is obviously brand new with chains not normally seen in this hood.

The area north of Flournoy is a distant 4th phase (office building IIRC). The next phase will likely be the Hampton Inn hotel at the back of the property behind the strip mall parking lot.

Another shot of the K3 "bridge". Note the sliver of daylight at the right end... this is a very big, stiff diving board with zero structural connection to the Halsted overpass.

What is that bridge for? Is it connecting vehicles to the Halsted overpass? Or pedestrians?

It's for vehicles to access a turnaround and dropoff zone for K3, which will be at the level of the Halsted overpass. If it were only for pedestrians they could get away with a much more lightweight structure.

Directly underneath the bridge is the "Hubbard's Cave" expressway tunnel cutting across the site on a slant, and the developers are not allowed to put any heavy permanent loads directly on the tunnel roof so they have to cantilever out over it.

To make things more complicated, the area with weeds in the foreground is a reserved right-of-way for a future rail line that would run east-west between the existing K2 building and the new K3 building. Not that they'll ever use it for rail, of course... but it's there if they need it.

I love the 21st century nod to the Chicago bridge steel work. I hope they don't cap it with concrete railings. I'd like to see a steel railing and decking like you'd see on any of the river bridges. Overall a very cool and unique feature to this building.
