Only 1 highrise for September's Plan Commission agenda: 160 N. Morgan St, which got a height chop to 29-stories, 350 ft, and reduced to 282 units

I don't think the loading/parking situation will suit Pete's (which I see has dropped "Fresh" from its name). More likely to be Amazon in this location, with all the students and young tech bros in the immediate vicinity. Or Dom's new chain, with lots of carry-out and HMR hot food.

Personally, I yearn for an Aldi in the South Loop, but like Pete's, their target market segment is the stock-up family shopper rather than the young single.

^^I think Aldi would be a perfect cromulent fit for this location, because it's affordable enough for many college students and younger people who live/work in the area, but still has high quality goods that appeal to everyone.

^Well, I've been surprised by the folks I see in the one at Old Town Park. But I don't think Aldi has great appeal to students or one-person households, because the range of single-serve and ready-to-eat (salad or hot bar) isn't there.

I thought Aldi would be a perfect fit for the old Palmer Printing building (now Imprint on Clark) because it could serve the small households of Printers Row and Dearborn Park and also be convenient for the auto commuters headed south to the Dan Ryan, driving home to South Side food deserts.

345 N Morgan

First time in 15 years I've been upset by the arrival of drilling equipment. No dancing banana for you sir.

Also, I'm kinda disappointed with 800 Fulton.
I was really excited about it while it was u/c but now that it's complete I just feel like its kind of a mess. Anybody else?

I like the original brown facade of 800 W Fulton. I still like it for the neighborhood but I'm perplexed at the switch to the red.

I, for one, am just mad that they are ripping off the design of an existing building with 345 Morgan:

Re 345 Morgan - eggplant is definitely appropriate. Literally nothing to get excited over w that one - it's an absolute dud. Hopefully Sterling Bay just needed to get one out of its system - or something.

800 Fulton - While I agree with you on the color, wouldn't go nearly so far as to call it a mess. Still think this one's a quite solid addition to Fulton.

I'd almost forgotten about 1130 N State - really like that one.

Btw, Glowrock, love that you changed your signature to that...I'd vote for it to also be the city's new official motto.

Looking forward to learning what you've caught wind of. Given the towers of greater height, I'm taking this as a clue that the shift to much more residential in Fulton will be sustained and maybe pick up some more steam. Very welcome.

^ I weep, knowing what will be lost. Indeed the structure right in front of your very eyes in that pic will meet its maker shortly.

Damn you, Chicago!

Clearly you're not familiar with Friends of the Parking Lot, who valiantly saved a noble parking lot from the ravages of productive cultural use.

It's definitely mostly the color but something about the massing is throwing me off too. I actually love the bracing but I don't feel like this was the best application.

I actually kinda like the parking garage, mainly because of the huge-ass cantilever on the Congress side. It's like a Donald Judd sculpture.

However, I will not shed a tear to see it replaced by a huge, dense mixed-use complex. Auto storage is never the best use for downtown sites...
