This hasn't been discussed on this forum yet, but Amway Grand Plaza is receiving a major facelift ($40 million), in the form of an entire re-cladding. The work is intense enough to justify the temporary installation of a crane on the sloped roof of the existing tower (which occurred over the past few months). Some impressive images below that I snagged from UrbanPlanet forumers.

MSU Embarks on Next Phase of Grand Rapids Innovation Park to Boost Medical Research

Quote:
The Michigan State University Grand Rapids Innovation Park, which opened in 2017, will add a second phase that includes 200,000 square feet of new R&D and office space along with a 600-car parking structure. A third building is being planned.

MSU is joined in the project by Health Innovation Partners, and together they focus on developing public-private partnerships to bring new drug and therapy discoveries to market. The new building is slated to open in late 2021.

Health Innovation Partners is a real estate development joint venture between Rockford Construction, MB Real Estate, and Walsh Construction/Walsh Investors. SmithGroup is lead architect. Together, the partners work on research, testing, and commercialization of new therapies and medical devices.

^ This is an interesting project in several ways - the lot shape, building size, and the construction methods employed (round steel tube structures, pre-fab concrete, etc). I find it interesting that the outer shell is preceding the interior structure. I'm sure it will start to make more sense as it progresses, it just seems atypical for Michigan.

Insurance giant Acrisure to move HQ to Studio Park in downtown Grand Rapids
BY Sydney Smith Wednesday, August 14, 2019 09:52am

GRAND RAPIDS — Acrisure LLC, a Caledonia-based insurance brokerage, is moving its global headquarters to the new Studio Park development in downtown Grand Rapids, MiBiz has learned.

The relocation for Acrisure will move about 400 jobs from the suburbs into downtown Grand Rapids, with more expectations for growth in the near term.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to create a new global headquarters for Acrisure, consolidate our home office talent into a single location and immediately enhance our collaborative culture,” Acrisure CEO Greg Williams said in a statement provided to MiBiz. “Additionally, as we continue to add new partners at a record-setting pace, our infrastructure capacity needs to match our growth.”

The Studio Park location will also help the company attract talent, Williams added.

Acrisure’s initial lease of 105,000 square feet at 100 Ottawa Ave. will make it the largest occupant of Class A office space in the city of Grand Rapids.

Grand Rapids airport plans $90 million expansion to accommodate growth

Quote:
GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Grand Rapids’ airport is undertaking a $90 million expansion that will add eight more passenger gates, create 300 new jobs and accommodate continued passenger and airline growth.

“Project Elevate will change the skyline of the airport,” said Dan Koorndyk, chair of the Gerald R. Ford International Airport Authority Board. “It sets the stage for not only the airport’s growth, but our region’s as a whole.”
The first part of what Ford Airport officials announced Wednesday, Aug. 28 as the $165 million “Project Elevate” is the $90 million eight-gate expansion of concourse A that will additionally bring a new look and new concessions to the terminal area.

Officials say the current number of gates, 15 of them, has proved a “choke point” and would stifle continued passenger and airline growth at the airport if not increased. Each morning, more planes take off from Ford Airport than there are gates.

Concourse construction is slated to begin in spring 2020 and conclude in 2022.

The expansion is one of three projects announced Wednesday. The other two are a new and relocated aircraft control tower, billed around $50 million, and a federal inspection station, billed at $25 million.

Given all of the other terminal improvements and airport upgrades that have been ongoing at Gerald Ford in recent years, I think this was expected. But I'm still impressed by the scale and architectural quality of the proposed gate expansion. I only hope that it stays on track and actually gets built. This would be a nice boost for the region.

I am getting a little sick of those two light fixture types showing up in practically EVERY new project though (the disc-shaped ones, and the long, skinny cylindrical ones). Enough already! We get it - your design is contemporary and different (like everyone else).

Renovations underway on Grand Rapids affordable housing project

Quote:
GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Renovations are underway to transform the former state Department of Social Services building at 415 Franklin St. SE into a mix of low-income housing and an early childhood education center.

The Inner City Christian Federation and Madison Church hosted a kick off ceremony earlier this month for the $19 million project, which is expected to be complete and ready for leasing by November 2020.

“We believe that the impact of affordable housing, early childhood education, and an invested church will be transformative not only in the 415 Franklin building, but in our surrounding community as well,” Pastor David Beelen, senior pastor of Madison Church, said in a statement.

The three-story building was originally built as Grand Rapids Christian High School. It will house 41 apartments, an early childhood education center capable of serving 72 children, as well as community space for residents.

MSU gets $19.5M gift from Doug Meijer, Meijer Foundation for medical innovation building

Quote:
GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Michigan State University accepted a $19.5 million gift Friday, Oct. 25, from Doug Meijer and the Meijer Foundation for a cutting-edge clinic to be housed in a new medical information building on the Medical Mile.

“Together we are bringing health, hope and healing to all people and making the best available care anywhere here and now,'' said Norman Beauchamp, MSU’s executive vice president for health sciences.

The Meijer gift, discussed at the Board of Trustees meeting, was awarded to the MSU College of Human Medicine for the theranostics clinic, which will provide a place to do new types of cancer therapy. It will include a cyclotron-equipped radiopharmacy and PET/MR scanner.

Theranostics combines the terms therapeutic and diagnotics. It is used to describe the combination of using one radioactive drug to identify/diagnose and a second radioactive drug to deliver therapy to treat the main tumor and any metastatic tumors.

The new $85 million medical information building will be named for Doug Meijer, a cancer survivor and advocate for treatment for all cancer patients. The facility will be next to the MSU Grand Rapids Research Center, 15 Michigan St. NE, at the MSU Grand Rapids Innovation Park.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — The vacant lot that once housed the Studio 28 movie theater in Wyoming will soon be abuzz with activity.

A ceremonial groundbreaking was held Thursday for a 226-unit housing development, known as HOM Flats at 28 West, that’s designed to serve low- to moderate-income residents. The first of the apartments, which will be spread among six buildings, is expected to be completed in summer 2020.

Developers plan new west side Grand Rapids office building

Quote:
GRAND RAPIDS — A group of developers are positioning their proposed new Leonard Street office building as a gateway to Grand Rapids’ west side.

Leonard Street Partners LLC detailed plans today for a $5 million, three-story, mixed-used building at the corner of Leonard Street and Broadway Avenue. The partners hope the building will serve as a “rebirth of the historic business corridor.”

“Our vision is a multi-use business and retail area that will bring many new jobs to this area,” said project investor Johnny Brann Jr., the owner of Kitchen67, Brann’s Restaurants and Interphase Interiors. “More feet and faces will be part of this corridor moving forward.”

Developers are proposing to demolish three vacant buildings to construct the 23,000-square-foot office building that will have commercial offices on the second and third floors. They have secured architecture firm Paradigm Design Inc., which currently operates at 550 3 Mile Road NW, as the anchor tenant. The ground floor will serve as retail space and be announced in the coming weeks.

$7.5M mixed-use building proposed in Grand Rapids’ Creston neighborhood

Quote:
GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Plans are in motion to build a three-story, mixed-use building — containing 36 market-rate apartments and retail space — on a vacant lot in the heart of Grand Rapids’ Creston Neighborhood.

The development, known as North End Lofts, would be located at 220 Quimby Street NE, across the street from Creston Brewery, and is expected to cost $7.5 million. It’s being proposed by Brian Papke, a developer who lives in Ada and recently helped launch a new firm, The Establishment Group.
