Before the Conflagration

Taken on 2/23/14 before hell broke loose:

It seems that the new Flickr photo beta experience won't allow embedding of photos until this coming Tuesday!

It appears to have been a balloon structure. As opposed to a mass timber structure. Someone correct me if i am wrong.

in the main rundown thread, it was mentioned that parcel P15, the Commons block in front of the USCF Cardiovascular Center, was underway. and while it's true that changes are afoot - for example, the fence along Fourth has been moved back, making space along the sidewalk...

... on closer inspection, looks like it is soon to be the home of something called Nomad Gardens:

makes me think that the actual creation of that block of the Commons is farther off than I'd like to hope

Great photos; I cant wait to move out there! Is there a website that shows which buildings have units available for rent? Or, are the various buildings all being built by different developers?

Poking around their site and Facebook page, it seems to suggest it will be there for 2 years. That's when we might see this stretch of the Commons completed. In the meantime, at least it will be in use with plants and people -- not too different from it's future life as a park. Their whole mission is temporary, movable garden spaces, so I'm not worried they will fight leaving when the time comes.

That's a pretty cool idea. It will certainly be an improvement on the empty dirt lot until the park progresses, but what happens when you plant your tomatoes and they pack up and move the garden to another area of the city 2 weeks later?

in case anyone missed it, Matier and Ross mention that building codes have been revised in recent years, making the mostly-wood-frame construction of block 5 a newly-allowable phenomenon that was at its most vulnerable (to fire) stage (all wood in, but sprinklers not operational yet)

and bizjournal talks about the delays even to the 'unaffected' surrounding blocks and to the 'hood in general the fire could cause

I had a few extra minutes to wander through the neighborhood this morning, and it looked and sounded like work had resumed on all in-progress parcels. (no further demo activity on block 5 itself yet, tho)

and Strata had indeed lost most of its Fourth-St-facing windows, which I hadn't noticed before

... here a few shots from this morning, since I don't usually get pics with the sun at an early angle :-)

Fourth St is open again... here looking west down Long Bridge St, with Mercy Housing on the right and of course, block 5 on the left. 'Sol' in the distance

looking west down China Basin, 'Arden' and 'MB188' in the distance:

and west at the alley between blocks 2 and 3

from around the blocks this past weekend...

the alley between Channel MB and Venue, looking west...

scaffolding has come down on the Fourth St side of Mercy housing, reminiscent of 10th and Market:

Strata's boarded-up windows:

a look at Venue and Channel MB on the east side of Fourth:

a look west down Long Bridge, with block 5 on the left, where clearing of fire debris has started:

on the south side of block 5, a look west down China Basin, with MB188 in the distance:

not sure why it has never occurred to me to get pics from the roof of the Rutter Center parking garage on the UCSF campus, but here is the view of the Kaiser medical office building from there:

and here a couple of wider shots looking north:

here is the UCSF building on 16th:

scaffolding has come down from the brick building part of the public safety building, and the walkway is partly open, tho there is still a gap where I think some form of greenery will be planted. the concrete blast wall could really use some paint or something. northbound:

southbound:

Mission Rock St on the north side of the building is still blocked off.

the north edge of MB South, along Channel: 'Sol' and 'Arden'

After giving $100 million to UCSF's children's hospital back in 2010, the Benioffs are giving another $100 million, to be split between the Mission Bay facility and Children's Hospital of Oakland.

Essex/BRE could start reconstruction on MB360 in a few months if the concrete foundation is undamaged:

We've talked about this a couple of times in the past, but a new report is suggesting the VA indeed pursue a partial move to Mission Bay, building on Salesforce property adjacent to UCSF. Lots of hurdles still to overcome though.
