The parking and circus historically would be located on the 60,000ft2 back lot of Manitoba film Studios at Gomez / Higgins for example. This income helps to offset costs when the stage would be empty and realty taxes still need to be paid to the City. This is a zoned use.

When an entity such as Centre Ventures “facilitates” Market Lands for film use in this way, it directly takes that income away from an industry player making their business less viable. Instead of the funds going to the land owners / building owner/ business owner, the income flows directly to CV for salary and office expenses.

As Market Lands will not be built out for years, these lands have / will become the de facto parking lot / circus. If that income has disappeared now for the next 5 years, what impact does that have?

Greater than you may think and affects strategic planning for Real Estate.
So the people who are supposed to be encouraging development of surface parking lots, the same people who regularly criticize the owners of said lots have created a surface parking lot and are now making money on it. Lol. Ohh Winnipeg. I love you!

That is exactly what has happened…

But please don’t call it a parking lot, it’s a Centre Venture sanctioned “Staging Area”.

I did not realize there was an existing lot already set up near by. I can see the owner of that lot not wanting to give up income to a public entity.

I would be the same way if I was the owner

It does help keep the area secure from non paying encampments etc when the movie industry is not using it.

LOL. Your hatred of CentreVenture is so amusing. Now their great injustice is they are stealing revenue from parking lot owners? I doubt they would be using a back lot two kilometres away. A note here is that CV receives no funding. If they are receiving a small fee for that rental until construction starts this summer, that seems like a solid business plan to fund their operations. I’m sure you also don’t support tax dollars supporting them.

Pretty significant stretch to call it a parking lot but if it makes you feel better. You shouldn’t hate them so much. If you know someone who owns a lot of open lots and old properties they might be able to help develop them to higher uses.

To be fair, CentreVenture sucks, but for reasons entirely unrelated to this parking lot.

ha ha....i'm all ears.

I personally don't love that the city made them buy those two hotels 15 years ago or so, but other than that, they have done a lot of good for downtown.

Personally not a fan of CV as they basically funnel tax payer funds to private developers.

Reality is if you fully dissolved CV as it exists today it wouldn't be long before a "new CV" was created with different people involved. Also pretty certain that the CV model isn't unique to Winnipeg but similar development agencies exist in most large cities.

Boy, are you going to be pissed when you find out that almost every private industry sector in Canada receives subsidies and grants in some form from taxpayers to the tune of about $4 billion per year.
