Virgin Australia makes COVID-19 vaccinations mandatory, calls for international flights to resume by Christmas
Augt 30, 2021
ABC News Excerpt

Virgin chief executive Jayne Hrdlicka says international flights could resume by Christmas and she is optimistic Australians will achieve desired vaccination rates to enable lockdowns to end and state borders to reopen.

But the boss of Australia's second-biggest airline said she was firmly against vaccine passports that would impose different restrictions on people flying between states.

"If you do the math, across the country, we should be in a position where we're 80 per cent vaccinated, you know, [at the] latest end of November, early December," she said.

Even Covid Can’t Stop Qantas Flying Too Close to the Sun
Bloomberg Excerpt
Aug 27, 2021

In an industry facing its biggest crisis since the dawn of jet aviation, Qantas Airways Ltd. has been having rather a good pandemic. It’s the return to normalcy it needs to worry about.

Shares rose 3.5% Thursday, the biggest increase in a year, in spite of the announcement of a A$1.83 billion ($1.33 billion) annual loss. One reason for the buoyant mood is that the domestic business managed to provide A$304 million of underlying earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization, despite running at half its normal capacity.

Depreciation subtracted a hefty A$1.92 billion, but that’s in some ways more a quirk of accounting policies than a true reflection of the way the assets deteriorated. Qantas writes down the value of its planes by the same amount each year. With only about a fifth of the capacity flown in the12 months through June relative to pre-Covid levels, that theoretical charge doesn’t reflect the minimal wear and tear incurred.

WA upset by potential change to Qantas international flights
news.com.au Excerpt
August 27, 2021

West Australian Premier Mark McGowan has hit back at a suggestion by Qantas that Perth may lose its status as a transit hub for flights to London due to WA’s notoriously strict border rules.

Qantas has unveiled its expectation for the return of overseas flights, which are slated for mid-December if Australia hits the 80 per cent vaccination rate needed to trigger the reopening of our international border.

The UK, Singapore, Japan, the US and Canada are among the destinations with high vaccination rates that Qantas expects to fly to first.

With flights to the UK expected to be especially popular, Qantas said it was considering using Darwin as a transit point for non-stop services to London, which before the pandemic, took off and landed at Perth.

Airline stands by promise to resume UK-Australia flights by end of year
Evening Standard Excerpt
Sep 3, 2021

Airline carrier Qantas has confirmed that they still plan to resume travel between the UK and Australia before the end of the year.

The airline is standing by plans to reopen flights to Britain from mid-December, along with routes to Fiji, Singapore, the United States, Canada and Japan.

The move is in line with the lifting of Australia’s overseas travel ban, which was due to end on September 17 but has been delayed by three months.

In an email to its customers, Qantas said: “With vaccinations continuing to roll out across Australia, we are getting ready to reunite our customers with their family, friends, colleagues and favourite destinations around the globe.”

In a statement in August, Qantas said the ability to fly non-stop between Australia and London is “expected to be in even higher demand post-Covid”.
