It is pathetic, and embarrassing. I have said it several times, but the city should never have proceeded with the City Square Plaza until they replaced the downtown sidewalks, and re-did the pavers on the Scarth Street Mall. (yeah, I know it's the Frederick W. Hill Mall, but I could care less).

I think instead of Pat's Patio or whatever it's called now, they should have redone all of Scarth and maybe even closed the 1900 block of Scarth to traffic and put more pavers there too. You could have more outdoor patio seating outside of restaurants and use the space for food trucks/farmer's market in the summer.

It appears preliminary construction has begun on the McDonald's located inside Evraz Place. Obviously, not that exciting but it's some kind of update.

I did get a quick photo of the 13th/Elphinstone building.



Like I've said previously and echoing others, the stucco looks bad. The colour scheme is ugly and it's really disappointing that something so bland would go in such a beautiful neighbourhood. No signage in regards to tenants as of yet.

I’m guessing the developer is saying F-U to the cathedral area folks that didn’t want the original 4 storey proposal which would have looked so much better. This is so sad.

Yes, it's awful. Probably the worst part is the stuccoed dividers between the balconies. However, the neighbourhood sabotaged the whole project. By removing a floor it completely changed the economics of the project so the developer likely went with some of the most long-term economical choices.

I agree! The building that was originally planned was much better looking than this turd. I would rather have the old buildings that were demolished than 'this' characterless box. It's a shame that we have the (subjectively) beautiful École Connaught Community School across the street. There at least should have been some brick elements that matched, or complemented, the brick on the school.

I hate buildings that are built as cheaply as possible, meaning that any architectural embellishments are omitted

It would be in my liking that they gave the Regina Planning commission less powers in my opinion they are useless does the city pay for any of these members

The McDonald’s and its current form is hideous they should ban stucco from everywhere downtown with a little like the McDonald’s building will be spruced up a bit to make it look half decent

A) The planning commission literally has no power. It only recommends.
B) The planning commission is unpaid.
C) This specific building didn't require any input from planning commission/council. At 3 stories it was an approved use.
D) This building is the fault of NIMBYs.

It's still truly absurd that the original proposal was voted down by Council and had so much opposition. If you can't drive intensification towards your main streets, where else do you expect it to happen/absorb it.

In fairness, I would probably have done the same thing if I was in the developer's shoes. The Cathedral community really squandered such a good thing over something so trivial in my personal opinion, so it makes sense for them to get something so hideous as karmic retribution.

Cathedral is such a strange area. It seems massively overvalued or overhyped by its residents but the same residents bitch and complain about developments that would actually add value and some beauty to an older area.

That original proposed development is about 1000x better looking than what was built.

Oh well, you reap what you sow.

That’s what I have been doing. Regarding the sticky list, there aren’t any current separate project threads to link to. Regina is going through a dry spell regarding tower projects. When they do happen, I will link.

There won’t be any new towers for a long time. I work downtown and our company (a federal Crown) is likely going at least partially remote and I’m guessing many other places will do the same. Demand for office space is surely to drop.

I am hoping for a mixed use, or just completely residential tower proposal. Some 4-5 storey residential infill downtown would be great as well.

I am also wondering where ALT Hotels will finally build their Regina property - I’m guessing earliest possible construction would be 2022 onward as this year is a write off with all the empty hotel rooms.

Actually, a hotel could very well happen. We definitely need more residential as well, since there will likely still be less office traffic on work days when things open back up. Which presents further challenges to a downtown that was already suffering pre-pandemic. I really wish our city didn’t let that theatre get built in the east end.

I took several bags of recycling to the new Sarcan on Gordon Road in Harbour Landing this morning. No complaints about the building meeting its purpose, however, I feel bad for the tenants of the apartments immediately to the west of it. The two buildings are fairly close to each other, and blocks the view from many suites. The view they have is of the back of an industrial, metal-sided building that is so out of place. It's the worst-looking building in all of Harbour Landing! Who wants to be on the back side of a busy recycling centre with the noise, and possibly field mice, that are associated with it? Our city planning still leaves very much to question (like my fellow SSP followers know all too well).
