Mines Field (LAX) 1930 & 1939 + 1951 expansion plan

Mines Field in 1930, looking very unthreatening. Surfridge had been laid out just nine years before, in 1921.

LAPL

Mines Field in 1939, bigger, but not by much. This is the approximate view we had (from a somewhat lower vantage point of course) from Sepulveda and (what is now) Howard Hughes PKWY in the 1950's of the LA basin as we came off of high ground and headed downhill north of Hermosa Beach where we lived. The splendid view across to City Hall (upper center), standing tall downtown, never failed to thrill me.

LAPL

1951 Master Plan for LAX sealing Surfridges fate. This drawing shows that the runways had already been extended a short distance to the west (Sepulveda Blvd was rerouted to jog around this extension). After the 1953 building of the Sepulveda Tunnel, Sepulveda Blvd was straightened out again and routed through the tunnel under the runways.

Oh, my....how my mind wanders....

LAPL

Ok, I know this is WAY off topic, and definitely not noir, but I was wondering....in the movie "Plains, Trains and Automobiles", was LAX used as the supposed location of the St. Louis airport? This spot looks exactly like the location where Steve Martin slid down the snow-covered slope and nearly got run over by a truck. Sorry if it takes us off-track, but in the movie Steve Martin was trying to get home for Thanksgiving (so, there is a slight topicality.

That's b/c I couldn't get it to load at first and had to add it later. The Expansion Plan finesses the disastrous effects on Surfridge by having this view peter out on the left margin :-(

Regarding the J Candy/S Martin endeavor, I don't remember it all that well. However, for what its worth, much of the film was shot in the mid-west, including Lambert Field in St. Louis.

And on that cinematic note, "Can you say that with me? 'Adobe'?" The "stuff" of which Bunker Hill and dreams were made?

Nah rick m, I didn't start working for ARCO at Fifth & Flower until at least 1974. The Engstrum was still up then. I actually viewed a model apt there in the late 1970's. I think it might still have been in place in 1981 when I left DTLA. The Engstrum had, of course, been obliterated by Library Tower by the time I came back to ARCO as a consultant in 1995. I don't actually know the demo date, but it wasn't 1970.

And speaking of rats, former Richfield Oil employees, who were housed in the Superior Oil Building directly across Flower St from the Richfield Building, during its demolition in 1968-9, told me they were horrified at the number of rats that poured out of the basement levels when their much-beloved and beautiful former "home" was destroyed.

Can anyone pinpoint the exact location of this photograph? I've googled 'grand hotel' so many times I want to cry.___
There was much interesting discussion regarding "The Grand Hotel" sign in the photo. http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=8804 It appears that there was a Grand Hotel and a New Grand Hotel, both of which were conveniently on Grand Avenue. Although I cannot recall seeing a photo of the Grand Hotel, Mr. Bengston, of "Silent Echoes/Visions/Traces" fame, provides a 1934 map that identifies the Grand Hotel at the corner of Grand Avenue and First Street. As a quick marker, look at the street name "GRAND" in red. Whether the sign in the photo is for this Grand Hotel, in 1918, remains to be answered. The map does not appear to identify any drinking establishments, per se, leaving open the question regarding the Bar sign in the Chaplin photo. It is possible that "the" bar might have existed in the guise of a store or res[taurant] which are identified.

As noted, there was also a "New Grand Hotel" located at 257 S. Grand Ave. It also went by the name of Nugent.

This Hotel is discussed in detail here: http://www.onbunkerhill.org/NugentNewGrand#comment-form

A couple "western" images of the Nugent / New Grand previously posted by GW http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=3032 (Stables may have been "just" around the corner. I hear the Tallyho stables at First and Broadway are fair.)

The Park Tract & Beaudry Tract

I don't think this has been posted before.

I remember there were still big, old frames houses on Beaudry across the Harbor FWY from DTLA in the 70's. Some got moved and the rest were cleared.

Barry Lawrence Ruderman Antique Maps

It was made by Renshaw Litho in 1884.

Pearl St was later Figueroa and Diamond and Court St are still with us, as are Depot, Bunker Hill, Yale, Cleveland and College, but I didn't know there were two Beaudrys or a completely different Figueroa. I'm getting extremely lost looking at this.

I understand Beaudry's Tract 2 was over in what's Chinatown now, but the Park Tract is a bit harder, even though Temple and Pearl are clear enough.

Damn freeways, they cut everything to ribbons.

Your guess is as good as mine. Since that tree is in the foreground, it clearly looks bigger than the other subjects, especially City Hall. Bear in mind that the buildings look to be a street away and at a lower grade. It may not be as tall as the Grant and Sherman sequoias, but the tree is still tall.

1963 - Rear of unknown Bunker Hill Apt house. (How would it have performed in a decent quake?)

1965 - view Bunker Hill, exact location unk.

1956 - 201 Hope Street

Noticed the steel post with a platform paralleling the wooden utility pole. Would this have been a WW2-era air raid siren or were there "modern" fire lookouts?
