The area between Venice and Pico has now been redeveloped. Sears and the streetcar loop have made way for a Lowe's hardware store and a parking structure. There is still a small bus terminal next door. Google's 45 degree views all show the Lowe's building under construction (as do the ones on Bing). Some of the Streetview images and the overhead view (below) do show the new buildings.

A huge hillside mansion in Brentwood in 1903? Seems unlikely & hard to believe, BUT the Sawtelle Veterans Home dated from the 1880's & would not have been too far away from what is now "Brentwood Park." Eagerly awaiting enlightenment.

Fascinating. Very impressive that you found such an obscure item, Odinthor. Thank you. Still, the woman in the photo looks more 1903 than 1913 to me - but I'm not an expert on fashions of that period. I looked up "Regent Square" on a real estate website & it refers to the area bounded by Montana, San Vicente, 17th and 21st Streets in Santa Monica - I don't think there are any prominent hillsides there (I lived in the area - 17th & Margarita - in the 70's.). Still, there is that reference to Tudor architecture and also a King Gillette property in "Brentwood." Hmmm...

Here's an early sketch and description from the February 26, 1907, Los Angeles Times. The house looked a bit different as-built:

Euclid Avenue and Grand Boulevard in Brentwood Park (circled in yellow below) is now I believe Hanover Street and S. Bristol Avenue.
I'd guess the Paulin home was on the NW corner. Here's the area on a 1910 map, with 26th Street running along the left edge and
San Vicente diagonally across the bottom half:

Mr. Paulin died at his Brentwood Park home, age 54, on October 26, 1915.

The above property is curious.

The home that's on the corner that could be similar from Google satellite view was purportedly built in 1958 and renovated in 1990.

It's possible the original home from the turn of the century was simply replaced after 50 years.

Looking at the views on Historic Aerials, the original house on that plot was at the back corner of the plot while the current house is much closer to the road. The change occurs between the 1952 and 1964 images, which ties in with the 1958 build date of the current house.

For those of you who like their LA facts and figures, I found this on the inside back cover of a "Los Angeles Today" booster booklet from 1921. I've never heard of the expression "Post Office Business" but check out the jump in building permits from 1919 to 1920!

That is Vineyard Junction of the Pacific Electric. The tracks diverging to the left are for the Venice Short Line, which traveled down Venice Blvd to Venice (duh) and continued on to Santa Monica, IIRC. The tracks heading straight went onto San Vicente Blvd into Beverly Hills, then down Santa Monica Blvd to Santa Monica. What is not shown is the loop for the Los Angeles Railway P line, which was off to the right. This is an approximate modern view

I couldn't help but notice that Sears' overflow parking lot is still dirt in this photograph (despite the modern lighting fixture)
