Their ads have Mardi Gras bands/parades and French Quarter imagery. I mean, they hit you over the head with the NOLA references.

Oh, I've never seen those. I mean, I'm well aware that Popeye's is from New Orleans, especially since I used to live there. And I know it is "Popeye's Louisiana Kitchen"... but I didn't realize that the name New Orleans was used in their branding. Which now seems to be the crux of this thread.

Ghirardelli needs to be on here for San Francisco. It's not just a company that happens to be headquartered in SF, it has its entire history there; its factory is somewhat of a local legend as it survived the 1906 earthquake, San Francisco is in its logo, and the old Ghirardelli lightbulb sign, completed in 1915, is an SF landmark, sort of like the "New Yorker" sign in NYC

I haven't had a Rolling Rock in a long time. It used to be everywhere in PA... now you hardly ever see it.

Miller uses Milwaukee in their branding.

^ that's not a common logo by a long shot.

None of Miller's products that I can think of have Milwaukee on the logo/label as part of the brand.

Your criteria are getting ridiculous.

So basically, if a city name is printed anywhere on a product, then it meets your criteria of an "urban brand"?

EDIT: I stand corrected... High Life has Milwaukee on it

Milwaukee's Best is a Miller product.

Yeah, I know it is. I was talking Miller High Life, Miller Lite, Miller MGD... any of the product line with Miller in the name. But come on, this is getting all over the place.

So Pabst is a Milwaukee brand because Old Milwaukee is a Pabst product??

By this line of reasoning, Techtronic Industries of Hong Kong is a Milwaukee brand. Because Milwaukee Tools is a Techtronic product!

Seattle's Best is a Starbucks brand. A direct parallel.

I think it's been pretty clear and you answered your own question above. I get a lot of Miller commercials on Spotify (I'll probably get another one since I just wrote that), and they all mention Milwaukee.

Ok, but make sure to add Techtronic to the Milwaukee brand list since Milwaukee Tools is a Techtronic product.

I'll keep harping on Starbucks. When it became popular in the 90s and 00s, it was seen as Seattle exporting coffee (or a new take on coffee) to new places. It was more about news stories, as they've never done a ton of broadcast or print media iirc.

At the same time, other coffee brands with Seattle in the name also prolifterated due to the same media attention. And of course independents also rose simultaneously, both competing against Starbucks and leveraging the new trend of espresso drinking. Even in Seattle it was unusual to buy an espresso drink on the way to work until Starbucks showed up.

Starbucks' use of Seattle continues, maybe in smaller ways...the ubiquitous Pike Place blend for example refers to the Pike Place Market (or Pike Place the street) where their original and oldest surviving stores were/are located. And of course the oldest store has hordes of people in a line down the street at all times.

In terms of other local brands...hmm.

Olympia Beer used to be big. Others are all micros or micros that got bought up and are still probably regional.

Costco uses Kirkland as a house-brand name. Kirkland is a large, older suburb not far from their HQ.
