This list claims that Calgary (49) is better than Shanghai (75).

Bullshit

I would want to know who created the list and what their criteria are for rating the cities.

In my opinion you have maybe 10-15 world cities as I call them - London, Paris, New York - then all the rest.

There are hundreds of already fantastic and emerging cities in Asia and Africa that are completely ignored in the list. London, Paris and New York were the top cities in the past.

Yes I see it. Do they provide a number of what weight each category amounts to?

How are their metrics decided upon?

Also this survey is done by a company called Resonance. Not sure if they have any skin in the game or not.

Anyways as mentioned before your always going to have your regulars in the top 10-15 then aggressive marketing of your city through this company will hopefully place you on the list somewhere.

We should take it for what it is worth marketing. Is it any different than buying billboard space it Time Square or Piccadilly Circus? It is important to get your named mentioned on a site with a targeted audience.

^ In that case Calgary is #49, there is nothing for Edmonton to cheer about.

I have trouble understanding what the difference between 89 place and 90 or 88 place.

When your up that high it becomes meaningless.

a long as Rio is on this list, it's worth s* to me. Ranking ahead of cities like Stockholm, Oslo, Mexico City and Shanghai? NO FREAKING WAY

Lived in that s**thole for two years and I don't know a single person who would put it on this list.

As for Edmonton and Calgary's positions, I'd say hat we should likely be a few positions up, they should be a few down, but realistically speaking, they're still ahead of us, no questioning.

^ As with most things these days it's more about style then substance.

Rio may be a hell hole but it is sexy and has a reputation.

That's why these rankings that come out are 99% garbage.

Hell hole doesn't even begin to describe it.
The city has more violent crimes than the whole of North America (Can + US), more deaths resulting of armed robberies and police confrontations in its rich neighborhoods than we have in all of Canada.

I lived there for two years, was robbed at gunpoint 3x, including having my car taken by a gang of 4, using military-grade weaponry. Most of my friends and colleagues had/have a cheap, spare phone that they can hand out at a robbery.

I owned a condo in Ipanema, and Copacabana before that, two of the most famous (and expensive) neighborhoods in the world, and I've had cartel members execute people, in broad day light, a few buildings from mine.

These lists are absolute garbage and Rio being there at all is simply stupid. There's no amount of major events, nightlife and fun stuff that compensates for the violence, chronic poverty and inequality and ridiculous cost of living (relative to the low wages paid there).

If we were talking about the 100 most interesting places to visit, yeah, Rio probably has a place there (but Edmonton surely doesn't), but if we're talking best 100 places to live, hell no, Rio should be as far from this list as possible (but Edmonton likely belongs, yes...)

I would think this would be a more relevant stat and carry more weight. Major cities in the world are very expensive to live in and that certainly affects quality of life which should be at the top of the list as far as metrics.

I'm sure there are better ways to secure it than what the very miniscule budget of EC allows for at the present location that doesn't involve a security guard (LOL the cost of that) or raising it in the far in to the air
Looks like Edmonton's temp is on the Environment Canada website now using a place called Edmonton South Campus for the measurement? No current conditions yet.
