Steel, the product, obviously has very strong cultural ties to Pittsburgh -- "the Steel City." So much so that the football team is named the Steelers, and the American Iron & Steel Institute requested that the Steelers use their logo on their helmets. The Steel branding is much more associated with the Steelers than it even is with the product/industry. Instant association/tie with/to Pittsburgh.

Far more than Cadillac or Pontiac brands are associated with Detroit, for instance.

The spirit of the thread is more about products or companies that sell products/services that built their brand around something specific to a city (examples: city's name, street name in the city, historical figures of the city who are famous for reasons other than the brand itself, etc.)

But the Steelmark logo is the opposite. The Steelers borrowed the Steelmark logo and made the explicit tie to the city of Pittsburgh. Without the Steelers borrowing it for their logo, what would be the link?

First, the Steelers didn't really borrow it. The American Iron & Steel Institute requested that the Steelers use it on their helmets to tie the Steel brand to the Steelers and to Pittsburgh... since they were called the Steelers, since Pittsburgh was known as the "Steel City", and since Pittsburgh was the headquarters of US Steel, which founded the AISI.

Remove the football from it... steel and the Steelmark logo is linked directly to Pittsburgh. The Steelers adding it to their helmets only reinforced the strong brand connection, aside from the VERY obvious "culturally specific tie to a city" rule.

It seems pretty simple, without the need for overthinking here. It's actually hard to find a brand/logo that is more linked to a city than this.

I never knew that was anything other than the Steelers logo. The word association is very strong. Anyone seeing that logo will think of Pittsburgh.

Portland tries to be consumption conscious but we spend money just like any other American city. Its funny we have some famous companies people probably didn't knowxwere from Oregon, Nike, Columbia Sports, Freightliner trucks, but none really try to cash in on regional notoriety. On the other hand, lots of marketing agencies and regional groups have been trying to turn Portland or the NW into its own brand, marketing a kind PNW aesthetic as the commodity.
