They need to run a spur to Ft. Myers/Naples. I realize that's quite unlikely but if AAF is as successful as we all think they will be, maybe we will see the public clamoring for new rail lines that provide service all over the state. It's happening in Virginia, they've had success increasing service to stations in the state and are now expanding passenger rail to places that haven't had it for decades (ie the Roanoke expansion)

Plus if they made it to Ft. Myers/Naples it's then only 130 miles more to connect to Tampa. There's already the possibility of a planned expansion to Tampa (from Orlando) right? I'm sure that's at least a decade away.
Well it would have go to Tampa first from Orlando and then make its way down the coast to the Ft. Myers/Naples area because there is no way a train would be allowed to cross the Everglades.

Why? Alligator Alley already cuts through the Everglades (of course) so why not just run the rail line right next to ROW?

Good, once they all explode we might be able to actually get transportation projects built in this country without having to wait for 10 years and billions of dollars wasted on environmental studies and lawsuits.

To begin with if a "train option" was viable to Naples/Ft. Meyers one of the railroad tycoons (Flagler | Plant) would have built that route prior to the environmental regulations and Alligator Alley in the early 20th. Century.
It didn't happen since Naples & Ft. Meyers weren't big enough as cities and still aren't.

This has been a fantastic week for Florida. From positive rail news to skyscrapers being revealed. Good times for the region.

^^^

I guess thats a good thing. Orlando airport is ridiculously busy, especially in the mornings. Had a 6 am flight in August, and just wall to wall people. Much needed expansion.

Orlando isn't a bad airport though. Its cute in a sense. Kinda feels like a hotel lobby at times and that carpet at the baggage claims makes it feel like a Holiday Inn.

Could just be hardball?

If AAF wants the Tri-Rail connection into DT so bad that they're willing to front the money, then they probably want it so bad that they'll just pay for it.

^ I doubt that AAF really wants Tri-Rail but they have released a diagram as to the configuration of the train platforms:

If Tri-Rail doesn't come up with the $69 million within the next few weeks then the AAF won't have to build the two additional platforms. Keeping my fingers crossed that Tri-Rail can come up with the funding in time making this station a true Inter modal station.
