Atrium On Bay: Rumoured Redevelopment

There is talk over at UT regarding a rumoured redevelopment/expansion of the Atrium On Bay (located on the north-east corner of Bay and Dundas)
These plans apparently include a 5 story addition and redeveloping the space to accommodate Target's first Canadian store.

Many wish to see the existing connection between the Atrium and the Eaton's Centre improved in the process.

That would be nice! The Atrium is a beautiful building already but I'm sure this could only make it better.

A new media tower would be nice.

I work beside the Bay Atrium and walk through it all the time. The Atrium is definitely lame. Apart from people who use it as a corridor there's nothing really going on there that would attract additional shoppers. Also needs better integration with the Eaton Centre.

I've always hated that media tower, looks like a mangled, metallic advertisement mess. There were unconfirmed rumours floating around the web about a tower for the NW corner corner of YD. I hope those ares till true. Excellent candidate for intensification, being at one of Canada's busiest intersections. Developers can probably get some really sufficient height approved for such an important location, and with minimal direct NIMBY resistance.

While I agree the integration with E.C. is terrible and it could use a better retail selection I hope the interior is properly preserved. It's such a beautiful example of early postmodernism.

Man, homeless people love the Atrium. Wow!

So many people on government checks hang out at that place. They really need to do something to bring it upscale and flood out the poor people. At least make it so enough rich people are there you don't notice the homeless people. Kinda like at the Eaton Centre.. so many people it's hard to spot the homeless peeps.

I spoke to soon, right next door, the new Womens Housing Shelter has been built on Elm, so I guess they can cater some of their stores towards these people living here.

This place needs a major overhaul. Target, or Marshalls.. ? whatever, just do it already!!

And H&R paid almost 400 million dollars for the place, a 100 million dollar profit for Hines.

Can you believe? And they know this place has so many homeless people on the bottom level.

Let's see what they can do with the place, I'll give them credit for fixing the water fountain though.

There might be a major change coming to Yonge Dundas square that will bring a lot of Caltrane's favourite "chichi" people to the area.

Its all very "hushhush" right now but I'll break the news when it's appropriate.

Well if it's a big US retailer, then it's only a matter of me finding out where the location is that is big enough to house them.

My First Guess:

The Atrium on Bay - Mid level floors, 2, 3, 4.

Second and Third Guesses based on Your Employment:

Eaton Centre - North End - Further Redevelopment

Third Guess

Eaton Centre - South end over the old Food Court / East of the Cadillac Fairview Tower.

Fourth Guess:

10 Dundas East Redevelopment / Metropolis

Hmm, some good guesses there, some of them are even on point, but not about what I was hinting at.

Should be a few big changes at least to that area, but one in particular that will change the entire feel of it.

I totally agree.
How can it be at such a ideal location and be so poorly connected
-- to the street ?
-- to the Eaton Centre ?
-- to the bus terminal ?

I agree as well. I've always hated that building, not because it's ugly but it's just to large to justify demolishing for something bigger and better. Hopefully I'm wrong and they can do something with that site. Lets face it, for the size of that buildings footprint it offers a very limited amount of square footage because of those two huge atrium's. Maybe they want to turn it into a vertical mall?

I would love to see this converted into a vertical mall! With more palm trees and water feature to accentuate the post modern design.

I think your wish is gonna come true.

Vertical mall it is most surely to become if target arrives onboard.
