^I really like that they are getting rid of that Comed substation eyesore. The eye and ear infirmary looks pretty slick too, assuming the red stone material isnt just painted concrete.

The Daley library expansion looks ... interesting. What materials are they planning on using on the second floor? Is that exposed concrete on the first floor? Why, UIC! Haven't you learned!?

Where are those new resident halls slated to go? Will they be replacing the SRC buildings at Halsted and Harrison? If so, seems like a waste to tear down perfectly decent, brick buildings (that come up to the lot lines, may I add) when there are plenty of fugly lecture halls and buildings (UH, SEO, etc.) that can be re-skinned and remodeled.

^ They chose not to cover up the blank wall next door? And instead to make a setback that lets the hotel rooms look directly into it?

Were they required to have the setback? Or are they probably planning to buy the Ivy Hotel and expand into its footprint? Although with the room rates Ivy apparently is charging, it seems their pencil building is in no distress from its tiny floorplates.

^ Seems like the plan for that site was always to leave the brick exposed on the western side.

It looks like this got a significant height reduction. On the plus side, it's a more cohesive design and the entrance looks interesting at street level. Here's the earlier rendering, from the front page:

I respect the choice to keep that exposed. I love the little pencil building and backing off a bit allows that design to continue to stand on its own.

Just think how much more dense this building could be if that panderhack Reilly hadn't forced them to put windows in every single hotel room!

June Plan Commission Agenda is up, and boy, there sure is a lot being proposed. Wouldn't be surprised if this meeting goes longer than the May meeting: https://www.cityofchicago.org/conten...017_Agenda.pdf

* Washington and Sangamon area in West Loop. 2 15-story buildings with 356 total units. A reduction in units from this article:

* 5438 N Sheridan Rd (Sheridan & Catalpa). 16 story, 174 unit building. Anyone know anything about this?

https://www.google.com/maps/place/54...655138!6m1!1e1

* 2835 W Belden (near Milwaukee ave) in Logan Square. 6 stories with 100 units

https://chicago.curbed.com/2015/7/13...o-logan-square

* 8535 W Higgins Rd, near O'Hare. 7 story, 297 unit building.

The Sheridan Rd project is meant for seniors, and has been in the works for a few years

The new Aloft is better than the old, contingent on materials used. The exposed brick next door is much less objectionable with the roof heights the same. It looked silly when Aloft was going up nine more stories.

That's a lot of good stuff, always good to see new developments on the south side.

West Loop continues to be on fire. Being on the Plan Commission essentially means that Zoning is approved, thus we have more good times to look forward to.

The Belden project is notable because it puts significant height for the area on the opposite side of the tracks from Milwaukee. That's a rarity. Bet there will be significant pushback.

It looked like they were setting up a crane base for 675 N Wells this morning.

Good news for State Street

Developer to Spend $141M on State Street Buildings That Aren't So Great

City Hall says it's found a developer willing to bring new life to a pair of State Street buildings that aren't so great.

Chicago-based CA Ventures, which cut its teeth building student apartments, plans to spend $141 million converting the vintage terracotta towers at 202 and 220 S. State to apartments, Mayor Rahm Emanuel's press office announced Thursday. A more formal announcement is expected later Thursday.
270 micro-units in the Consumers Building, 159 studio and 1-bedroom apartments in the Century Building. Plus retail of course.

YES! I work right next to this building and have been waiting for this for a long time. Great news! This could be a beautiful building once restored to its former glory

^ Awesome news indeed! I remember when the feds bought up those properties with the intention to tear them down and expand the federal center. Thank god that didn't happen. These buildings are art deco gems, and to have featureless, barricaded federal office buildings replace them would be a crime, as well as completely deaden that stretch of State.

I like that the new glass portion in between 202 & 220 S State is set back a bit, in order to not steal the spotlight from the two architecturally significant buildings bookending the block. This looks to be a real win win project!
