Now we need a mock up of the Domain's skyline once all the proposed towers are completed.

Wow, thanks for posting. 2nd biggest skyline in Texas is something few could have ever predicted. I'd really like to see where this puts us on the national level. Has to be top 10.

Well the article is in regards to the "tallest" city when current inventory is stacked one on top of the other, not sure if biggest = tallest. But I can see how it could be hand in hand. Dallas seems bigger than Austin to me.

It seems this takes height, as well as total number of building in to consideration, which seems to be a good way determine the size of a skyline.

50 buildings at 500 feet a piece is 25,000 feet.
100 buildings at 250 feet a piece is 25,000 feet.

One is taller, but the other has more buildings. But they're the same size.

Or...

50 buildings at 800 feet is 40,000 feet.
100 buildings at 300 feet is 30,000 feet.

Less buildings, but a lot taller=bigger skyline.

Or...

50 buildings at 500 feet is 25,000 feet.
200 buildings at 250 feet is 50,000 feet.

Shorter buildings, but a lot more=bigger skyline.

Makes sense to me.

Agreed. It doesn’t take into consideration two important factors though:

1. Building widths:

A building that is 400’ tall but only 25’ wide is not as substantial a visual presence as a building that is 300’ tall but 150’ wide. Multiply this effect among many buildings and the difference in perception aggregates to the skyline as a whole. Austin has many skinny point towers that may have a higher peak total, but Dallas’s skyline feels more substantial because its towers have more width from all angles.

2. Spread between buildings:

Having a centralized cluster greatly adds to the visual impression, and dispersed buildings detract from that impression.

I’ve been waiting for a measure of visual mass, which would hopefully take into consideration the two factors above.

Did they calculate the total number of highrises throughout the cities? I mean Houston has A LOT of buildings outside it's DT. I find it a bit shocking that we are already currently 2nd in overall height considering Houston has skyscrapers everywhere...

Speaking of, can someone give me a short answer for how an when Austin will be able to build tall pretty much anywhere?


Seems we are well positioned to do this currently in Domain, S. Waterfront, and East Austin?
