There was an FAA filing today for a 320 foot tower crane at the location of Dell Seton Medical Center.

This lists the building height as 232 feet.

The hospital building at 15th & Red River was built to allow vertical expansion which is what the permits are for.

^^ I always thought that seemed short. Didn't realize that they built it with a future vertical expansion in mind.

Surprisingly they do that with most hospitals, though not really with any other type of building.

How tall is that building now? This sounds like they are going to more than double the height.

St. David's Round Rock is also seeing some vertical expansion. I didn't realize they did that with most hospitals (not sure if they did that with the Round Rock one or not, though they are going up with it).

According to the info on the previous page the original plans called for 4 more floors on top of the existing hospital with and additional 140 beds. The existing hospital is 10 floors with 211 beds.

A 14 floor hospital being 232 feet tall sounds plausible, but maybe they decided to expand by another floor or two.

St. David's did this with their South Austin Hospital as well.

Yeah, I remember that. The heights I had recorded for that expansion were 14 floors and 220 feet. The current height of Dell Seton is 162 feet with 10 floors.

There's been a few vertical expansions over in the Texas Medical Center in Houston over the past few years/decades. I'd never really thought of that being a medical building-specific thing, but yeah, seems to be for the most part. Pretty cool and fun to see happen with Austin's medical complex "skyline".

Frank Erwin Center demolition expected by end of 2024

Quote:
The UT System Board of Regents will meet this week and may approve an amendment for the demolition project. A $25 million demolition will make way for a Dell Medical School expansion, according to UT System documents.

The project entered its demolition phase in January. A “construction notice to proceed” is expected in June. Final completion is expected in October 2024.

1950-60s "urban renewal"/highway planning and 1970s Brutalist architecture is such an assault on the eyes, and scourge on every American city... it can't be deleted fast enough.

I thought it was pretty cool when it was completed.
Something totally different for that part of town back then.
