Report into deadly train crash highlights 'unprofessional' worksites
Excerpt

Taipei, May 10 (CNA) Unprofessional worksite practices and unclear contract stipulations were among a number of failures surrounding a train crash that killed 49 and injured 213 in April last year, the Taiwan Transportation Safety Board (TTSB) said Tuesday.

On April 2, 2021, the No. 408 Taroko Express Train derailed and crashed into the wall of the Qingshui Tunnel at 9:28 a.m. after hitting a contractor's crane truck that had rolled onto the tracks.

A TTSB report released Tuesday found that pressure from the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) to expedite already delayed construction had led to contractors ignoring instructions to suspend work on the day of the crash.

Transport minister envisions round-the-island HSR service
Excerpt

Taipei, June 8 (CNA) Amid government plans to extend Taiwan's high speed rail (HSR) network to Pingtung and Yilan, Transportation Minister Wang Kwo-tsai (王國材) on Wednesday expressed an ambition to establish a round-the-island service.

Having already started preliminary work on HSR extensions between Zuoying Station and Liukuaicuo Station in Pingtung County, and between Nangang Station and a proposed new station in Yilan County, Wang told Yahoo TV the ministry's long-term goal was to make the service available across the island.

However, Wang said that related work should be carried out "section by section" due to high construction costs.

Hotel operations, tour groups in TRA corporate plans
Taipei Times Excerpt
Aug 14, 2022

The Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) plans to create its own international hotel brand as part of its corporatization.

The Legislative Yuan in May passed the third reading of the State-run Taiwan Railways Corporation Act (國營台灣鐵路股份有限公司設置條例) — to transform the TRA from a regular government agency into a state-owned corporation — and amendments to the Railway Act (鐵路法), which would allow the TRA to utilize its assets more freely.

Business not related to the TRA’s rail operations include real-estate investment, property leasing, food sales and merchandising, but income sources and asset development can be diversified after the amendments take effect.

Taipei, New Taipei mayors break ground on first metro section in Shulin
Excerpt

New Taipei, Oct. 14 (CNA) Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) and New Taipei Mayor Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜) broke ground on the construction of the first metro line section in New Taipei's Shulin District on Friday.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the 6.6-kilometer section in Shulin marked the beginning of the second phase of the construction of Taipei Metro's Light Green Line, currently being built between Taipei and New Taipei, according to the New Taipei City Department of Rapid Transit Systems.

The Light Green Line, also known as the Wanda-Zhonghe-Shulin Line, will connect Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall Station in Taipei and Huilong Station in New Taipei's Xinzhuang District, and expand the Taipei Metro network to Shulin for the first time, according to the department.

Taiwan high-speed rail operator to buy new trains from Japan
NHK Excerpt
March 16, 2023

The operator of Taiwan's high-speed railway service plans to buy new trains from Japanese companies.

The board of Taiwan High Speed Rail decided on Wednesday to procure trains from a Japanese alliance of Hitachi and Toshiba.

The two sides are expected to sign a formal contract in the near future.

The Taiwanese firm will spend about 930 million dollars for 12 trains that have a total of 144 cars. The vehicles will be made based on Japanese Shinkansen bullet trains. The first of the new trains will be put into operation as early as 2027.

Taiwan's high-speed railway service linking Taipei and Kaohsiung opened in 2007. It was the first overseas use of Japan's Shinkansen technologies. All of the high-speed trains in operation there were made by Japanese manufacturers.

Train passengers could be denied service for mobile device 'noise'
Excerpt

Taipei, March 24 (CNA) Train passengers who are deemed to be excessively noisy, particularly those using mobile devices, could be denied service if they do not listen to on board train personnel who warn them they are disturbing other passengers, according to the Ministry of Transportation and Communications.

Transportation Minister Wang Kwo-tsai (王國材) has instructed Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp. (THSRC) and the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) to draft measures to reduce passenger noise, such as chatting too loudly on phones or playing video or audio on mobile devices without the use of headphones, the ministry said in a statement released Friday.

Both train operators have been asked to promote mobile phone etiquette to improve the quality of the services they provide, as train carriages are enclosed spaces, the ministry said.
