I agree...number three is the way for us to go but is it too late. Have we sat on the sidelines and let other airports pass up by. These drawings are just proposals and we're years for construction to start and more years for the dust to settle. just my two cents

I really don't think so. As San Antonio expands, of course demand will go up--ABIA is building out their 2040 master plan which will also go so far for the next few decades. It is highly unlikely either city will build a smaller regional airport for domestics, so they kind of both need one another to expand in different ways. Just my own two cents.

I don't think its going to be very long before new construction begins at SAT. The new team of airport administrators has a clear vision and very efficient planning process. Terminal A is our La Guardia and the city is anxious to get rid of it. If anything, with the Routes Americas happening here in 2022 and demand from cargo operators, like Amazon and FedEx, *I would expect a final plan this year and runway expansion happening right after (mid to late 2022 or early 2023).

-Note that the host city for Routes Americas also tends to get a few new flight announcements during the event.

*Also, if airport leaders are expecting widebody aircraft from Europe (Frankfurt and/or London) and Hawaii within the next few years - they would, in theory, need to start construction on Terminal C within the next couple of years since Terminal B has the only wide body capable gate and it lacks customs. If they used Terminal A for Frankfurt, they would have to use the city owned gates and they'd have to shut down the surrounding two gates while the plane unloads/loads and that's not cost effective. This puts pressure on building a new Terminal C sooner rather than later.

*Disclaimer: Just my thoughts, I could be completely wrong on this.

Glad to see all the planning that happened. I bet they are trying to tee things up for a coming infrastructure bill in Congress. $2B is a lot of money! VirtualBX did a good job of laying things out:

Airport officials weigh plans to add gates, widen concourses, centralize security

https://sanantonioreport.org/san-ant...lize-security/

A new terminal is on the horizon for the San Antonio International Airport.

Airport officials presented to an advisory commission on Tuesday three concepts for how the airport could be expanded to accommodate the city’s future growth and air service needs.

In 2019, about 10.8 million passengers traveled through the San Antonio airport. While 2020 saw those numbers drop by half

Glad to see Alaska resuming two flights a day. I'm kinda perplexed as to why Southwest is only operating 1 daily flight to El Paso. I thought they used to run 2 non-stops daily to ELP. Maybe the airport can convince Jet Blue to pick up the SAT to PHL

There's a few routes which are lacking compared to 2019, but this can be said for most airports in the US.

I think AA will eventually end up flying SAT-PHL again, but don't see any other airlines attempting it. Southwest and Frontier tried it, both didn't last long. AA operates a large hub at PHL, so if they can't make it work, no one else can. I was surprised to see AA return on JFK before PHL.

As for JetBlue, if they decide to start service here, the only routes I can see are SAT-BOS and them taking over AA's SAT-JFK, with their new partnership. Maybe even a flight to Orlando.

We can bring more business to the city to allow more people to want to travel to and from here. Then that will bring a base and more traffic. We got to keep positive on the things we need to better SAT.

I'll be interested to see the international passenger numbers in March and April.

Using this website https://awt.cbp.gov/ you can view international arrivals at airports.

Picking April 6
Between 9am and 10am, 2 arrivals
VivaAerobus 676 from Monterrey and VivaAerobus 162 from Mexico City
341 passengers

Between 11am and noon, 2 arrivals
Volaris 5958 from Guadalajara and Aeromexico 632 from Mexico City
245 passengers

Between noon and 1 pm, 2 arrivals
VivaAerobus 670 from Monterrey and Volaris 964 from Mexico City
308 passengers

Between 4pm and 5 pm, 1 arrival
Aeromexico 634 from Mexico City
94 passengers

Between 5pm and 6 pm, 1 arrival
Volaris 5964 from Mexico City
121 passengers

Between 7pm and 8pm, 2 arrivals
VivaAerobus 672 from Monterrey and VivaAerobus 166 from Mexico City
255 passengers

Between 8pm and 9pm, 1 arrival
VivaAerobus 678 from Monterrey
140 passengers

Not sure if they count crew as part of their numbers but 11 flights with 1504 passengers. Compared to last year, April 7, 1 flight the entire day with 86 passengers.

If its not a Boston route, European route, or an airline creating a base at SAT... there is no "big announcement" to be made. I'm guessing another Mexico destination/airline. If Jetblue/Spirit enter the market... #yawn

not much discussion on airliners.net but a few of the posters on there think it'll be a Spirit Airlines announcement.
